Pang was never going to use sat. kicks of a dying horse. why didn't they say it before.

I came across the following old article recently. Startimes is already on SES5 broadcasting as ‘StarSat' on 5 TPs which holds a good number of Chinese and South African channels; following acquisition of On-Digital Media (ODM) of S.Africa. If they were to place Kenyan channels on easily accessible Ku-band satellite, I guess the channels would have been Free-to-View (buy a special decoder and activate it once to make it FTA) or Free-to-Air on some of the 5 TPs on SES5. Note that Startimes is already availing FTA kenyan channels on 10 East. I guess they use the Sat to link their upcountry transmitters. It's not clear for how long these will remain FTA.

LUXEMBOURG - Saturday, September 14th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

SES announced today that StarTimes Communication Network Technology, China's most influential system integrator, technology provider and network operator, has signed a 10-year contract on SES-5 at 5 degrees East to expand its media footprint in Africa and deliver direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast services across the continent.

StarTimes, which is the fastest-growing digital TV operator Africa and has over 2.6 million digital terrestrial television (DTT) subscribers, also acquired SES' 20% shareholding in South African pay-TV operator Top TV.

The contract will see StarTimes utilise four transponders as of October 2013 and a fifth transponder from February 2014 to grow their DTH subscribers in Africa. The Chinese broadcaster will continue to broadcast TopTV on SES-5 by using three of the newly-contracted SES transponders that were formerly leased by ODM. The other two out of the five SES transponders contracted by StarTimes will be used to complement their DTT offering in remote and non-urban areas and grow their pay-TV business.

"The recent success of StarTimes's strategic investment in ODM will allow us to reach new audiences in South Africa. The partnership with SES enables StarTimes to have a DTH platform in addition to the existing DTT and mobile TV (CMMB) platforms in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, the high-powered SES-5 at the prime orbital location of 5 degrees East is ideal in overcoming the challenges of terrestrial coverage to reach large audiences. This will allow us to extend our broadcast reach across the continent and ensure excellent service and picture quality for our viewers," said StarTimes Group Chairman and President Pang Xinxing.

According to Ferdinand Kayser, Chief Commercial Officer of SES, "the new partnership with StarTimes will illustrate how the combination of DTH and DTT is a key enabler in Africa's migration to digital TV and also help set pace in the continent's digital migration race."

Someone kindly advise me on the merits and demerits of Qsat Q13g decoder

I was also trying to decipher that annoying screener on the MBC channels. I thought it was something to do with going secure. I noticed the same is not available on the HD version of the channels.

Satellite TV channel MBC Misr experienced another deliberate jamming of its signal on Friday 14th March during the airing of Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef's El-Bernameg show.

timthumb.php

This was the second time its signal has been jammed following a similar incident during Youssef's episode Friday last week.
"I am not accusing anyone, but I am wondering about the state's inability to protect its satellite which brings it profit from being jammed for an hour from an unknown source," said Youssef via his Twitter account after the show was aired.

The Saudi-owned channel that broadcasts from Egypt's Media Production City issued a statement introducing a new frequency following Friday's disruptions in the signal.
Youssef's third season of El-Bernameg resumed 7 February on MBC Misr after being cancelled on Egyptian satellite channel CBC in October.
It was suspended following complaints that Youssef had mocked supporters of army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and allegedly insulted Egypt's military.
Egypt's general prosecution referred to investigation in Feburary fresh complaints against Youssef of insulting the armed forces, the will of the Egyptian people and the "symbols" of both Egypt and its government, thereby threatening the safety and stability of the country.
The prosecutor referred the case to Cairo's appeals prosecution, which is already looking into at least 30 complaints against Youssef since November.
The 39-year-old comedian also faced a probe under ousted president Mohamed Morsi over allegations of insulting the president and Islam.
In a February poll by Baseera - an independent Egyptian polling agency - 68 percent of respondents aged between 18 and 29 said they liked the show, up from 47 percent in October. The figure for respondents aged over 50 was 35 percent, compared to 22 percent in October.
The show has approximately 8.3 million viewers inside Egypt, Baseera said.

Someone kindly advise me on the merits and demerits of Qsat Q13g decoder

Dear PSOLO,I won't go into the merits and demerits of Qsats. I will only offer you free FTA logic. Please never engage yourself with things to do with backstreet payment hardware, especially when you will be paying shadowy characters who wont be there when the signal suddenly is scrambled and yet you have paid. These decoders that work like dongles where payment is made and you have to use the modem to decrypt sygnals is run by a cartel and you risk burning your money when things go bad. Restrict yourself with FTA, but if you want to try them for educational purposes then you may take a risk, but just know that there is a shadowy character who will skim you off your penny. As a rule of Thumb, STRONG Decoders are indeed strong (forgive the pun).
