Blockchain is the technology behind Bitcoin, but it’s much more than just money. Think of it as a digital, shared ledger that records transactions across many computers. Because this ledger is decentralized, once a piece of information is added, it cannot be changed or deleted without the consensus of the entire network.

Key Characteristics:

  • Decentralization: No single bank or government controls it.
  • Immutability: Once recorded, data is permanent.
  • Transparency: Anyone can verify the transaction history.
Why it matters in Africa: It offers a way to build trust in systems like land titles or cross-border payments without relying on expensive middlemen.

I got a clearer picture of how secure ledgers work after tracking a few small test transactions on Coinscryp, since it shows on-chain activity in real time and makes the whole process feel less abstract. Seeing how data can’t be changed once it’s recorded really helped me wrap my head around the idea of decentralization.
