What determines the strength or weakness of the currency?

Our shiling has for a long time been slumping against almost all major currencies, although it has recently registered some gains. I have been asking myself for a long time, what stands behind all this state of affair? And what should our country do to arrest the situation before it gets out of hand? Guys please help me
