For many Ugandan households, the avocado has long been an affordable and nutritious addition to daily meals. Whether served alongside posho, bread, chapati, or rice, it has been a staple fruit that many families could easily afford.
However, that is quickly changing. A recent visit to local markets and roadside stalls reveals that avocado prices are rising steadily.
Today, some vendors are selling a single avocado for as much as Shs3,000, while others are charging between Shs2,500 and Shs2,000 depending on size and location. Just a few months ago, the same fruit could be bought for a fraction of that price.
The increasing cost has left many consumers wondering what is driving the surge. Is it seasonal scarcity? Increased demand? Rising transport costs? Or are traders simply responding to market forces? Whatever the reason, the impact is being felt by ordinary consumers who now have to rethink their food budgets.
