Upo umuhimu mkubwa sana kujifunza utamaduni wa mataifa mengine. Mwanafunzi aliyekwenda kusoma China au Japani akirudi amevaa Kijapani, anazungumza Kijapani atakuwa amefanya jambo zuri.
Kuna ndugu zetu wako nje, baada ya kuishi huko kwa muda, wanatuagiza tuwanunulie nguo za kimasai wakazivae huko. 🙂

Kwa upande mwingine, kwanini waswahili (wenye kipato kidogo, cha kati, cha juu) kuna mambo ya kigeni hatuigi japo yanafanywa na wageni hapa kwetu? Mfano ni utamaduni wa kwenda safari, kupanda mlima, kutembelea mbuga n.k.

Tatizo lingine linakuja, what is western? Is Rock and Roll Western? What are the origins of Rock and Roll if not the blues, which in turn originated from the sorrowful laments of southern slaves?

Is the essence of Hip Hop western? What is Hip Hop but a modernized version of rhythm and poetry as performed by the griots of West Africa?

Is government western? What is the western government system and ideals but a spin out of Renaissance Western Europe, Charelmagne and The Holy Roman Empire, the Roman Empire, the Greek City states which took it out of Egypt where in turn it was taken out of the bosom of Africa?

Is adventure seeking western? Who are the original seafarers, before the Phoenicians and the Vikings? Who first populated the outlying continents of the world if not Africans?

Is formal education western? Where did Pythagoras go to get his sacred knowledge which later enlightened the length and width of Greece?

Is science and inquiry western? Where was the first time the circumference of the earth established, with no fancy technology no less, but a well and knowledge of the heavens and the earth, but in Seine, out of the waists of Egypt which fed him the knowledge of the earth, commonly referred to as Geography.

Is the rule of law western? Where did the Romans and Napoleons of the western world get their template to base their codes if not for Hammurabi and the courts of Rameses?

I could go on and on on military supremacy, the African origin of Christianity etc etc?

What indeed is Western? Most of the things we think as "Western" were only popularized and advanced by the west, now is not the time for Africa to shy away from advancing these concepts which are originally non-Western, and even those meritorious ones that are truly western, even further, it is time to adopt a cosmopolitan if not global approach and look at things with an eye to merit, not some self imposed cultural cocoon.

If we are to adopt or reject a concept it should be solely on the merit, not otherwise.
