Three men convicted of raping, burning and killing a teenager in a 2014 case that got world-wide attention have reportedly been freed by India’s highest court.

The trio released Monday were said to have killed a 19-year-old Delhi woman in 2012, according to the BBC. Her mutilated and singed body was found with signs of a gang rape in a field in the north Indian state of Haryana, along with one of the suspects’ wallets.

The Indian Supreme Court found a lack of “cogent, clinching and clear evidence” in its decision to turn the unidentified men loose. That three-judge panel described the judge in the initial case as “passive” and found problems issues with the investigation.

“We had faith in the judiciary, we believed that the Supreme Court will confirm the death penalty and my daughter’s killers would be finally hanged,” the victim’s father told the BBC.

The exonerated men had reportedly confessed to brutalizing the victim, who family members said had just received her first paycheck from a call center where her new job made her the sole earner in her home.

The three suspects were sentenced to death for the crime in a verdict that was upheld by an appellate court. Investigators testified the suspects — whose DNA was found in the victims’ car — had led police to Anamika’s mangled body.

Her father said that for a decade, the family had waited for a ruling that “dashed in minutes” their hopes for justice.

“After this court order, no girl in India will be safe,” the grieving parent said.

According to the BBC, he had come straight from his job as a school security guard to the courthouse hoping Monday’s hearing would provide closure for his daughter’s loved ones.

He questioned why evidence, investigative methods and witness testimony that stood for nearly a decade came under doubt. Among the issues cited by judges in the court’s reversal were the circumstances surrounding the suspects’ arrests and chain-of-custody questions regarding evidence.

A lawyer for Anamika’s family said the high court’s 40-page report would be challenged through a petition.
