Utamu wa Siasa za Kenya: The Intrigues of Political Alliances and Coalitions.

Deputy Prime Minister
Musalia Mudavadi has
ruled out a pre-election
coalition deal with ODM,
saying that his United
Democratic Forum party
was careful with whom it
entered into alliances
with.
However, he said that a
committee had been
formed to work out a
coalition agreement with
Vice-President Kalonzo
Musyoka’s Wiper
Democratic Party.
But the move might
complicate the talks,
given that the Wiper
party has recently been
warming to Prime
Minister Raila Odinga’s
Orange Democratic
Movement. (READ: ODM
lauds Kalonzo for ditching

Mr Mudavadi fell out
with his former boss in
ODM when he ditched the
party to run for the
presidency.
“We are open to alliances
with other parties, but we
are very careful when
selecting the parties we
enter into coalitions
with,” Mr Mudavadi said.
Ideals and agenda
He said his party would
not consider some of the
advances by some of the
parties that are seeking to
enter into a coalition with
it.
Mr Mudavadi said UDF
would only work with
parties whose ideals and
agenda mirrored its own.
On Tuesday, the UDF
aspirant received
members of the Vijana na
Raila, a youth lobby
associated with Mr
Odinga’s election
campaign, at the party’s
headquarters in Nairobi.
The secretary-general of
the group, Mr Shem Otoi,
said they had now
changed to Youth for
Mudavadi, signifying
their new allegiance.
Mr Otoi said the Orange
party was not responsive
to the youth agenda,
which apart from
forming majority of
Kenya’s voting
population, had also a
long list of grievances top
of them being lack of
jobs.
Mr Mudavadi also
received a delegation of
defectors eyeing various
seats in Kilifi, Taveta,
Kisii and Lamu counties.
They included former
Cabinet minister Morris
Dzoro, who is gunning for
the Kilifi senator’s seat,
and former MPs Basil
Criticos and Harry
Kombe.
Extension of deadline
At the same time, the
UDF presidential hopeful
called on the Independent
Electoral and Boundaries
Commission to ensure it
stuck to its timetable to
register voters, saying
that there would be no
window for extension of
deadline.
He said that the next
parliamentary session
could be the last for MPs
before Parliament is
dissolved in January in
readiness for the General
Election.
“Now that the IEBC has
released a timetable for
registering voters, it
should stick to it as there
may be no opportunity to
extend the time for the
exercise,” he said.
Parliament extended the
IEBC timeline for voter
registration from 90 days
before the election to 60
days due to delays
acquiring Biometric Voter
Registration (BVR) kits.

The Sabatia MP also
called for thorough
investigations into the
Baragoi killings in which
about 40 police officers
lost their lives to
suspected cattle rustlers.
He warned that such
incidents, if allowed to
occur during the
electioneering period,
could be used to disrupt
the exercise and interfere
with the country’s
democratic process.

divisive politics is done by all quotas.....UK has been on record threatening PK and Karuas career. I loved Karuas response to the gag, that some leaders/criminals lack decorum and should never lead this nation, a very infuriated woman she was. On the other hand, i havent seen Jakom shooting down an opposition in Nyanza, he gets it bila stress or opposition, no crop of posing leaders match up to him anyway.
I beg we hold this discussion for some time kiasi; lets see if Uhuruto will change tact; coz as of now they are a very predictable lot. URP/TNA cant expect victory by relying on Kale and Kyuk votes only.

I have not heard of any implotion in TNA/URP. Cmon karua should be one of the candidates that should be flexible enough to engage freely in such mind games without discontent. Methinks there is a surprise in the offing as Karua is set to settle in TNA very soon. watch this space. The establishment of only ODM in Nyanza is an indicator that no other party or candidate can thrive there. ODM is the proconsul there.

Kwani am I talking of anything unimaginable? ndugu. i predict wait

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua continued her presidential campaign tour of counties in Gusii land, maintaining that her party will not be cowed into folding up in favour of The National Alliance (TNA).

Speaking in Ogembo town in Bomachoge constituency on Thursday, Ms Karua took a swipe at some central Kenya leaders whom she accused of behaving as though the region belonged to a particular party.

The Gichugu legislator said such leaders failed to understand the meaning of multi-party democracy that allowed Kenyans freedom to belong to any party of their choice.

"It is a shame that some leaders think certain regions of the country belong to particular parties. We are in an era of multi-partyism where parties are like shops. In business, you can't close your shop so that your brother's can prosper. Such dictatorship where people are forced to join parties is untenable," she argued.

Karua, who was flanked by deputy party leader Augustine Lotodo, local aspirants Fontina Obare (women representative) and Lukas Ondieki (governor), warned Kenyans against electing leaders with corrupt backgrounds.

She described the vice as a cancer that had affected the nation to the core.

"Corruption denies citizens their rights. If you continue electing the same corrupt individuals because of their money, we shall be doomed. We need a leader to end corruption once and for all and I am that kind of leader," she said.
She cited the rising food prices and insecurity in the country, which she attributed to corrupt dealings within Government.

"Both President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have failed to end corruption. Both sides of the coalition have been riddled with scams and so neither of them can promise Kenyans a better future," added Karua.

She addressed roadside rallies in South Mugirango and Bobasi constituencies and asked Kenyans not to elect individuals with cases pending at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Also while addressing a rally in Nyamira County, Karua urged Kenyans to reject political leaders with tainted integrity.

She was referring to the ICC suspects - Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North legislator William Ruto.

As I was recuperating in my hideout, word was spreading round that Karua still needs to labor to make her hands dirty. She still has time. Word was also that Kenyan women have not matured enuff to assume something sensitive like leadership. They maybe learned yes but they still need maturity to moderately deal with national issues that affect all citizens.

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto have struck a pre-election coalition deal that will see them contest the presidency on a joint ticket.

Mr Kenyatta’s spokesman Munyori Buku said that the deal will be unveiled on Sunday, at a rally to be held at the Afraha Open Grounds in Nakuru at 2pm.

"The two leaders have agreed on an alliance whose goals will be national unity, prosperity for all Kenyans, reconciliation and offers a definite and clear roadmap of making Kenya an economic powerhouse in the region, Africa and the world in the next decade,” Mr Buku said in a statement Tuesday.

He said a team from the two parties- The National Alliance (TNA) and the United Republican Party (URP)- is working on the programme and plans for the Sunday rally which will include two caravans - one starting at Kinungi near Naivasha and the other at Kuresoi – that will converge in Nakuru.

“Many other like-minded party leaders, MPs, aspirants for various seats, councillors and religious, business, women, youth, cooperatives, union, farmers and civil society leaders have been invited and will be present,” Mr Buku said.

In another development, TNA has dismissed claims that the deal with Mr Ruto’s URP will result in zoning the country.

TNA secretary general Onyango Oloo said Tuesday that TNA and URP will field candidates in all areas. He said the TNA-URP coalition deal is not crafted in a manner that denies voters the right to elect leaders of their choice.

“As a party we do not support any kind of zoning of the country. Any coalition that we enter into will be made at the level of the presidency. We have also not distributed any government positions whether at Cabinet, parastatal or ambassadorial level. This we see as propaganda from our competitors,” Mr Oloo told the Nation.

He said TNA and its partners would after forming government evaluate how much votes and seats each partner brought after the elections before filing up the various positions. Mr Oloo said TNA was also seeking political partners who share in the same values.

“Before we partner with you and form government with you after the elections, you must demonstrate the value you bring in terms of the seats and votes your party can get. You must also share in our ideals and principles,” Mr Oloo said.

There have been reports that Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto’s teams are yet to agree on how to field candidates under the coalition.

However, the Nation has established that the two agreed on Saturday that their parties remain independent but have a common name and symbol for their joint presidential ticket.
