Uganda's LC I Elections | July 28, 2026

1/: Today, the 28th of July is a public holiday in Uganda, where Citizens are voting to elect Local Council I (LC I) chairpersons and village committees through the traditional lining-up voting system.

Candidates from the National Resistance Movement (NRM), National Unity Platform (NUP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Democratic Party (DP), People's Front for Freedom (PFF), other political parties and independents are competing across the country. Police and other security agencies have been deployed nationwide to maintain peace and order, while the Electoral Commission has urged voters to exercise their constitutional right peacefully and warned that electoral offences such as bribery, voter intimidation, impersonation, violence, and vote manipulation will attract criminal prosecution.

2/ Police in Mityana District have arrested an Electoral Commission supervisor over allegations of soliciting and receiving a Shs268,000 bribe from an LC I chairperson candidate in exchange for manipulating election results.

The suspect, John Mawejje Kwizera, 45, the Electoral Commission supervisor for Central Division in Mityana Municipality, allegedly received the money from William Bukenya, an LC I chairperson candidate for Kansuleeti Village, on July 24, 2026.

Police say Kwizera promised to alter the official Declaration of Results Form to declare Bukenya the winner regardless of the actual outcome of the election. He has since been charged with bribery and is expected to be produced before court.

Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameka Kigozi warned all Electoral Commission officials against engaging in electoral malpractice, saying anyone found soliciting bribes or manipulating election results will face the full force of the law. He also urged voters to participate peacefully, warning that security agencies are ready to deal decisively with anyone attempting to disrupt today's electoral process.

3/: Just in: Journalist and Director of The African Institute for Investigative Journalism ( AIIJ) Solomon Serwanjja has won the LC1 chairperson seat for Bamutakudde village in Mukono district, squeaking by with a margin of just 1 vote. Yes, 1 vote.

They were 3 candidates: Lule Badru Ssozi Kirwana under NUP; Serwanjja himself —an Independent; and David Kyambadde Zziwa, also an Independent.
