NRM candidate James Leku Pili has won the Adjumani West by-election with 12,432 votes, defeating independent candidate Gasper Draga, who polled 2,559 votes.
The result was declared on Thursday evening by Adjumani Electoral Returning Officer Eunice Christine Akao.
The by-election attracted 15,216 voters out of 51,437 registered voters, representing low turnout.
The Candidates.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former MP Gen. Moses Ali on July 18, 2026, after decades of representing the area.
The election was largely peaceful, with observers from the Uganda Human Rights Commission and Global Election Observation Mission reporting that polling materials arrived on time in most areas, biometric verification generally worked well and there were no major security disruptions.
Draga conceded defeat but alleged that he had identified irregularities and signs of manipulation in some declaration forms. He did not provide further details to support the allegations.
Leku thanked voters and pledged to address the challenges left unresolved by his predecessor while calling for unity among residents.
Following the victory, NRM Director for Mobilisation Rosemary Nsubuga Seninde urged party leaders and supporters to maintain unity after divisions during the party primary.
