The Ministry of Finance has released Shs56 billion to the Electoral Commission to facilitate the long-awaited Local Council (LC) elections across Uganda.
The funds are aimed to support the conduct of elections for LC I, LC II and Village Women Councils, paving the way for a process that has been delayed for years.
The release of the money comes as welcome news for thousands of aspiring candidates who have been waiting for the government to provide funding for the elections.
The Electoral Commission is expected to use the funds to finance key electoral activities, including the printing and distribution of voting materials, training of election officials, voter education, and the overall management of polling operations nationwide.
The upcoming elections will enable communities to elect leaders at the village and parish levels, positions that play a critical role in local governance, conflict resolution, community mobilization, and the delivery of government programmes.
The Electoral Commission is expected to announce the detailed election roadmap and key dates for nominations, campaigns, and polling.
