Posts circulating on social media and messaging platforms alleged that Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, had ordered the closure of all schools by 25 June 2026 to prevent the spread of Ebola. The reports further claimed that authorities would later issue guidance regarding examinations, term dates and reopening procedures.

Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports has dismissed the claims, describing them as false and misleading. In a statement issued on Monday, the ministry clarified that no decision has been made to close or suspend schools due to Ebola cases.

The ministry said the rumours, which spread widely through social media and word-of-mouth conversations, had caused unnecessary concern among parents, learners and school administrators. It reassured the public that schools remain open and urged citizens to disregard unverified information circulating online.

Speaking on behalf of the ministry, Education Ministry spokesperson Dennis Mugimba called on parents and school authorities to rely only on official communications. He advised education stakeholders to remain vigilant and continue observing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Ministry of Health.

“Please ignore videos and social media messages speculating about closures of education institutions of learning. Parents and heads of institutions are urged to remain vigilant and observe Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as guided by the Ministry of Health,” Mugimba said.
