Uganda's Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain calm but vigilant following reports of a confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria involving a Nigerian national who had recently traveled to the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a public statement issued by the Office of the Director General Health Services, health authorities clarified that the reported patient transited through Uganda in early October without showing any symptoms and only developed signs of illness after arriving in Nigeria.

According to the Ministry, the fact that the traveler passed through Uganda does not mean the infection was acquired in the country. Investigations are ongoing to determine where the exposure occurred, while Nigerian authorities are expected to provide more detailed information regarding the patient's travel history and clinical records.

The Ministry emphasized that Uganda currently has no confirmed active Ebola cases, seeking to reassure citizens amid concerns that have spread on social media following reports of the case in West Africa.

"Uganda has no confirmed active Ebola cases," the statement stressed, noting that health officials continue to monitor the situation closely in collaboration with regional and international partners.

As a precautionary measure, the government has announced plans to strengthen screening and public health controls at points of entry across the country. Health authorities said the enhanced measures are aimed at detecting any potential risks early and ensuring Uganda remains prepared to respond to any suspected cases.

The Ministry also revealed that provisions remain in place to facilitate essential humanitarian and diplomatic movements while maintaining strict public health safeguards.

Uganda has extensive experience in managing Ebola outbreaks, having successfully contained several previous incidents through rapid surveillance, contact tracing, community engagement, and coordinated response efforts. Officials say these systems remain active and can be strengthened further if the situation warrants.

Members of the public have been advised to continue practicing proper hygiene measures, including regular handwashing and sanitising, while remaining alert to information released through official government channels.

Health authorities warned against the spread of unverified information, urging citizens to rely on updates from the Ministry of Health and other recognized public health institutions.
