The United States government has extended its suspension of travellers from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan from entering the country for another 30 days, citing continued public health risks linked to the regional Ebola outbreak.

In an October 11 notice, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), operating under the Department of Health and Human Services, said the updated directive would remain in effect for 30 days.

Although the CDC acknowledged Uganda's successful containment of the outbreak, it said the risk of cross-border transmission from neighbouring DRC remained a concern, particularly in western Uganda and among healthcare workers.

The agency noted that some Ugandan districts serve as entry points for people travelling from the DRC to seek medical care, creating potential exposure risks.

The CDC also cited a case announced by Kenya's Ministry of Health on October 6, involving a person who had travelled from the DRC through Uganda before flying from Kampala to Nairobi on October 2. The individual was hospitalised and died on October 5.

The notice did not include Kenya among the countries affected by the extended suspension, despite the reported case.

The extension underscores Washington's continued concern about the potential spread of the virus across borders, even as Uganda has contained its outbreak.
