THE government has distributed about 57,000 dengue fever testing kits to health centres and hospitals in the country, to help medics carry out the exercise without difficulty.The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Donan Mmbando, told the 'Daily News' that some of the testing kits had been preserved in the Medical Stores Department's regional warehouses. He added that the medical kits have capacity to provide service to 57,000 people at a time.
"The problem is on decline following a number of government's initiatives including raising awareness to members of the public," he said.
According to the Dar es Salaam City Health Officer on Communicable Disease, Mr Alex Mkamba, the number of dengue fever patients has decreased for the past week in the city.

"The number of patients decreased from 47 to 17 last week and most of the cases are at OPD (Outpatients Department)," said Mr Mkamba.
Distribution of the kits came following the declaration made by the Vice-President, Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal, recently that the government was all out to ensure that all hospitals in the country are furnished with the kits.Dr Bilal also urged members of the public to ensure they adhere to the health guidelines issued by health practitioners in checking the disease."Given the threat posed by dengue fever to the people, the government has resolved to distribute the testing equipment to all district hospitals so that the disease can be detected in its early stages," he was quoted as saying by the media.
Apart from the kits, Dr Bilal said the government was taking a number of measures aimed at eradicating the disease. He noted further that the people should not be afraid as the government was working around the clock to eliminate the disease.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Saidi Meck Sadiki, had also previously announced that all upcountry buses arriving or departing the city would be fumigated in a bid to check the spread of the disease."We have almost 600-passengers buses entering the city daily, but we have ordered the Temeke Municipal Council to handle those from Mtwara and Lindi and Kinondoni will oversee those using Morogoro Road," he said.He said the buses were to be fumigated upon arrival from upcountry so that passengers who travel the next day are safe and the exercise will be repeated after every two weeks.In dealing with the disease, which has taken Dar es Salaam by storm, Mr Sadiki said they have also started the fumigation exercise in various schools and open spaces.He, however, underscored the need for city resident to keep their environment clean. Spot check by the 'Daily News' at Ubungo Bus Terminal also established that fumigation exercise had already been initiated.
