Right now, I'm feeling pretty good ndugu wananchi! And as a matter of fact, this probably is by far the best goose-bumps I have ever had! I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry [frame it whatever you want]. But saying, "Ich Bin Mtarime," is what I really feel doing today.

In case you missed it, below are some excerpts from seven pages letter-which is due to be sent to to: President Kikwete, Premier Pinda, Speaker Sitta, and Chief Justice Agostino Ramadhani sometimes later in october [this year] by the group called Tarime Citizens Action Group (TCAG).

WE WANT OUR STATUS TO BE THAT OF AUTONOMOUS​

...The kind of autonomous status we want extends only to the power to set up our own system of education; Public service [water services/postal service/waste management/power utility]; and of course, supreme control of our God-given natural resources, gold.

Aside from protecting our own self-interest, we face, of course, another threat from the mining industry [Barrick Gold Corp] which makes our demand for autonomous status even more urgent than ever.

Killing/assassination has long been Barrick's strategy and its government backers [Regional Commissioner, District commissioner, Tarime police station] in dealing with the locals who have always opposed the giant mine.

These killings have been going on (unchecked) for almost 7 years now, which leave the questions: where is the central government? Does it even make any sense for the citizens of Tarime to continue to plead allegiance to the flag of the United Republic of Tanzania (when the very same government is in bed with those who are spearheading the killings against us)?

Flashing back:

In August 2001, hundreds of villagers, particularly community leaders and some prominent locals were targeted for illegal arrests in which several local leaders including the late Chacha Zakayo Wangwe (who at the time was elected Member of the Tarime District Council) were harassed and threatened leaving one guy, Augustine Nestory Sasi, being sentenced to 30 year in prison without even any due process of the law (this was before Tundu Lissu & company got him out after appealing to the High Court of Tanzania).

On top of that, for years now, the giant mine has been taking villagers' lands for its mining operations [and this is done by force] by simply dumping millions of tons of waste rock/debris onto village lands without even the pretense of seeking villagers' consent or payment of compensation as required by law.

Even more disturbing, the company has been also releasing waste water full of hazardous chemical substances from Barrick's tailings dam onto villagers' lands deliberately! This is happening at Matongo & Ghokona Villages where hundreds of hectares of farmlands have been flooded with the cyanide-laced swamps released from the tailings dam.

Not only that, the company has been also releasing this cyanide-laced water into the Tigite River, which in turn, empties into Mara River [please bear in mind that most of rural poor use the very same water from these two rivers for cooking, drinking, washing, and gardening].

I mean, we’re talking about human beings here (not animals) who have constantly been exposed into arguably one of the most potentially harmful chemical substances of its form. We're talking about defenseless people who have long been ignored by their own government!

And that’s why we want our status to be that of autonomous.
