The pink diamond was found in October 1947 at the Mwadui mine in Tanzania, owned by Dr. John Thorburn Williamson. The uncut stone weighed 54.5 carats. The stone was cut by Briefel and Lemer of Clerkenwell over a two month period to its current 23.6 carats. Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth displayed great interest in the process and visited the workshop to inspect the stone during the cutting. Dr. Williamson hoped to find more pink diamonds to add to the original gift but none were found so he added 170 brilliants, 12 baguettes, and 22 marquises instead.

Na queen mwenyewe hata shinyanga hapajui, ndio maana tunamlaumu Rostam ila bora jamaa alivyoichukua Mwadui tu...japo imechelewa ila inatia heshima tunaweza kurun Migodi mikubwa.
