BIO – Patrick E. Ngowi – Founder and CEO – Helvetic Group (E.A.) Patrick E. Ngowi, 28 is a serial entrepreneur who started his first business at age 15. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Helvetic Group, which comprises numerous holding companies that operate in 3 countries. In 2005, Patrick received a loan of $1,800 to start his business selling Chinese mobile phones from his mother. After discovering that only a tiny fraction of Tanzanian's had power, he set out to setup Helvetic Solar Contractors and later established Helvetic Group; growing his business from the loaned sum into a group of companies with revenues in millions of dollars; with network and equity in renewable energy firms operating in East Africa. Patrick has proof of his leadership, vision and business prowess by being awarded 1st Place Winner of Top Mid-Sized Companies Award in Tanzania 2012 - 2013, Forbes 30 under 30 Best African Entrepreneurs, has been profiled by several publications and media outlets including The East African, Forbes, Start Young UK, MSN, CNBC, Africa Business Journal, Ventures Africa, and the BBC. He is a member of the East African Business Council, member of the CEO – Roundtable in Tanzania and Tanzania Private Sector Foundation and was a speaker on ‘Africa's Young future' at the African Global Business Forum 2013 invited by COMESA and Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.


He sits as board member with advisory role in various companies throughout Africa. The culmination of all his business achievements he the Light for Life Foundation, the non-profit social enterprise of Helvetic Group which focuses on providing free solar energy for women in rural parts of Tanzania. The Foundation works to create sustainable economic and business development opportunities for women by providing new power outlets. New business models are born in rural Tanzania through establishment of mobile phone charging points that bring about new income. He has set out to install 1,000 such solar systems as the initiative aimed at rural Tanzania. Patrick has received recognition nationally and internationally for his works.

Ndugu January Yusuph Makamba is the new Member of Parliament (MP) for Bumbuli constituency in the Tanzanian National Assembly (The Bunge). He sailed through unopposed in the October 31, 2010 general elections, representing the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ticket. He won the August 1st primary election within CCM with a margin of 80.11% against 8 other contestants.
Before running for Bumbuli parliamentary seat, January was Aide to Tanzanian President Hon. Jakaya Kikwete for 5 years since 2005.



Born in January 28, 1974, January obtained his primary education from various schools across Tanzania, completing his studies at Masiwani Primary School in Tanga. He did his O-level secondary school in Handeni and at Galanos in Tanga. He further pursued his A-levels at Forest Hills in Morogoro.
January never imagined himself pursuing a political career. As a young secondary school student he aspired to be a doctor or perhaps engage in a career in business. This all changed during a gap year before university when he spent time in Kigoma, in the northwest of Tanzania. The year was 1994 and the Rwandan genocide was at its most murderous phase, forcing a huge influx of refugees into Tanzania. While in Kigoma, January got a job in the refugee camps, first as a Registration Clerk and later as an Assistant Camp Manager for the second biggest camp in Kigoma with 120,000 refugees, known to its residents as Mtabila II. Witnessing the extraordinary daily suffering of human beings in the camps left an indelible mark on the young January, and from then on he made a promise to himself that he will dedicate his life to conflict resolution, to ensure that such untold suffering never happens again.



With that in mind, January attended St. John's University, a small catholic school in Minnesota, USA, majoring in Peace and Conflict Studies. As a sophomore, he won the Upper Midwest International Human Rights Fellowship organized by the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center. The fellowship funded his internship and research on refugees' protection at United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Field Office in Kasulu, Kigoma. After graduating in 2000, he became a Research Assistant at the Carter Center, an institute founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and housing the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, out of Atlanta, Georgia. As part of the fellowship, in 2002 he spent time in Sierra Leone with the election monitoring team, an experience that deepened his desire to understand issues of democracy and governance and the nature of war and the pursuit of peace.



After completing his assignment at the Carter Center, he enrolled for a Master of Science degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University in Virginia. After graduating in 2004, January returned to Tanzania and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a Foreign Service Officer (Grade II), where he teamed up with then Foreign Minister Jakaya Kikwete. He worked closely with him in the regional peace negotiations that Tanzania was involved in at the time. After the latter ran for president in 2005, January joined him on the campaign trail, traveling with the candidate to every district in the country. The experience made January realize that perhaps public service was his calling and when candidate Jakaya Kikwete was elected President, January joined him at State House as one of his appointed senior aides and speechwriter.
In that capacity, January has also occasionally acted as a personal envoy of the President to various sections of the society, particularly the urban youth. As aide to the President, he has attended Cabinet meetings, as well as National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, the top decision making body of the ruling party CCM as an observer. He has widely traveled, inside the country and globally, along the way gaining knowledge on leadership, development plans and policy making, as well as in national and international politics.



January has been involved with CCM as a "young pioneer" in primary school and later as a member of CCM Youth Wing since 1989 while in secondary school. He has been a member of National CCM Youth League Governing Council since May 2010. He was recently appointed a Director of the Board at the Tea Board of Tanzania (TBT).
January is an avid reader and author of one book and several opinion articles. He is married and has two children.

Hackney council approves plans for Manhattan Loft Corporation

Hackney council's planning committee has approved David Adjaye's plans for a fashion hub in Hackney, east London.

The £100 million development is a joint venture between the Manhattan Loft Corporation and Chatham Works and aims to build on the existing outlet stores on the site occupied by Pringle, Aquascutum and Halcyon Days, as well as Burberry.

Harry Handelsman, chief executive of Manhattan Loft, said: "We are delighted that these visionary plans have been granted permission. We can now start delivering the plans that will create a new fashion destination that will provide new jobs in the area and extra footfall to existing local shops."

Adjaye Associates has designed two buildings for the project reaching up to eight storeys in height. As well as shops they include cafes and business and retail space.

Work has already started to convert the railway arches in Morning Lane between Churchwell Path and Link Street into new retail spaces; also designed by Adjaye Associates these will sit alongside the new development. This part of the project is being funded by a £2 million grant from the GLA's regeneration fund.

Islam Feruz


(born 10 September 1995) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a centre forward for Superleague Greece club OFI Crete on loan from Chelsea. He is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Chelsea first team, having mostly represented the team at U21 level in recent seasons.
Feruz spent most of his youth career with Scottish Premier League team Celtic, but later moved to Chelsea in September 2011 after rejecting a professional contract with the Scottish club.

Mbwana Alliy is the founder and managing partner at Savannah Fund, an Africa focused Technology Venture Capital fund that runs both an accelerator and seed investments in e-commerce, gaming, education technology and social networking. As of 2014, he has overseen 15 investments in Africa in 5 countries (Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana). These companies, most less than 2 years old have generated over 145 full time jobs. Mbwana also advises Golden Gate Ventures, a South East Asia VC fund with $60M under management. He is passionate about product development and launching new ventures in technology. He is an experienced Product Manager within consumer web, enterprise Software & SaaS. He is originally from Tanzania and has lived and worked in 3 continents (USA, Europe and Africa). He has a Bachelor's Engineering degree from Bristol University and an MBA from Stanford Graduate school of Business.


Previous Career:
Before returning to East Africa and founding Savannah Fund, Mbwana started his career working in military flight testing at QinetiQ, once a UK Government defense research organization as a systems engineer and software developer and most recently working as a Product Manager in the Office and Business Intelligence Group covering products inc. Groove Excel, Excel Services and Access at Microsoft. He later went on to co-found Tanzania's first ecommerce travel portal, YellowMasai.com and then worked as an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at i/o ventures- a silicon valley based accelerator and seed fund.
Mbwana enjoys blogging about technology in Africa whenever he can to tell the truth (not hype about Africa's technology revolution- journalists BEWARE!)


Other Passions:
His passions include Travel and Photography, hiking, snowboarding and has recently gotten back into coding on ruby on rails and working on a few web and mobile side projects. One of them is trying to improve the safety in Tanzania's Ferry system, Usizame via a mobile application.
