Tanzania’s Bold Moves in Mining, Advancing Local Empowerment: The Future Is Here

Tanzania has revoked 40 mineral exploration licenses held by companies that failed to develop their concessions despite repeated warnings and grace periods. Violations ranged from land hoarding and unpaid fees to weak local content compliance and neglected corporate social responsibility.

This decisive action sends a clear message: mining licenses in Tanzania are instruments of development, not speculation.

Under the leadership of Samia Suluhu Hassan, these reclaimed concessions will be returned to the state and strategically reallocated through the “Mining for a Brighter Tomorrow” programme. Priority is given to small-scale and artisanal miners, capable local investors, and youth, ensuring Tanzanians are at the center of the country’s mineral economy.

This is a significant step toward genuine local empowerment. By opening access to previously idle resources, the government is creating opportunities for job creation, entrepreneurship, and community development in mineral-rich regions.

The approach remains balanced and pragmatic. It enforces accountability while maintaining an open, rules-based environment for serious investors ready to develop assets responsibly and contribute to national growth. Strengthening compliance with the Mining Act improves governance and secures revenues that support essential public services.

Building on reforms initiated in 2025, this move reflects a broader strategy to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth in Tanzania’s mining sector, home to gold, graphite, nickel, and other critical minerals. Removing dormant license holders improves sector efficiency and restores confidence in the allocation system.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan deserves recognition for steering this reform agenda with clarity and resolve.
