The government has formed two separate committees to probe the crisis-ridden Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) and both teams have been charged with coming up with independent opinions on the future of the national carrier.
Mr Martin Ntemo, spokesman for the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, told the 'Daily News' yesterday that the committees are made up of experts appointed by the Minister, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa.
All these committees are still working on the companys crisis and will soon submit their reports, Mr Ntemo said. If all goes as scheduled, the minister plans to hold a news conference tomorrow at which he will address endless media queries over the airline, following suspension of the airlines Air Operating Licence three weeks ago and its return last week.
There is so much pressure that the minister wants to address the press on Friday lets hope this arrangement isnt interrupted, he said Meanwhile, the ATCL Board has allayed fears that the crisis could lead to retrenchment of company staff fears generated by the workers themselves who argued that it was impossible for the company to maintain such a big number of workers without generating any income.
ATCL has more than 300 workers, with an estimated monthly pay cheque of more than 400m/-, including allowances. ATCL Board Chairman Mustapha Nyanganyi maintained yesterday that according to the airlines strategic plans, it would in fact need more staff to meet its expanded operations with plans to acquire more planes and spreading out to more destinations inside and outside the country.
We are just finalizing details to restart operations and the rest will follow, Mr Nyanganyi has been quoted to have reassured the public. He pointed out that all efforts were aimed at ensuring that three existing planes start operating once the government injects more capital.
The five-year strategic plan projects that the company could increase its fleet of planes from five to (at least) nine, depending on the capital injection from the proprietor and the business performance. So the present workforce will be there to stay, he said. But he cautioned that the existing workforce could be reviewed if the government isnt now ready to put in more capital.
On Tuesday, Mr Nyanganyi told this newspaper that the Board had directed the ATCL management to approach the government for a $76 million (92bn/-) booster fund for the airlines survival and meet overdue December staff salaries. On December 8, TCAA suspended the airlines Operators Certificate, in a precautionary measure it said was necessary in order to avoid possible compromise to its flight safety.
My Take:

Govt moves to bail out ATCL
PIUS RUGONZIBWA
Daily News; Friday,January 02, 2009 @20:15
The government has injected 2.5bn/- into the crisis-ridden Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) and formed a task force to thoroughly look into the companys problems and advise on measures to rescue it.
.......
With three planes, the company is reported to have more than 300 staff. On ATCLs debts, Dr Kawambwa said it owes South African Airways (SAA) $4.2m, various service providers and suppliers 9.1bn/- and the government about 17.5bn/-. But he explained that the governments debts had been transferred as capital of the company.
Meanwhile, the government has decided to review the management contract of Tanzania Railways Ltd (TRL), with Indias investor Rites that was signed last year. The Minister of Infrastructure Development, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, told reporters yesterday that anytime this month Rites top management would be in the country for discussions on the contract.
He said one of the issues to be discussed was the need of a joint management of TRL which is currently run by 100 per cent by officials from Rites. The government owns 49 per cent shares in the TRL, while Rites owns the rest 51 per cent.
