Sergeant Alois Mabhunu, a police homicide detective in the western city of Bulawayo, was on surveillance duty a fortnight ago at the annual Zimbabwe International Trade Fair when he received an urgent call of nature, local radio station VOP said.

He rushed to the first toilet he could see, which happened to be a privy being guarded for Mugabe's use during his appearance at the show. Police guards tried to block Mabhunu's access, but he fought his way through and locked himself in, VOP said, quoting from a police charge sheet.

Having relieved himself, he left and resumed his duties. But the toilet guards reported the incident, including to the secret police, and he was arrested the next day.

Mabhunu was being held in a police detention barracks outside Bulawayo and was due to appear on Friday before a police disciplinary hearing, VOP said.

Police spokesman Mandlenkosi Moyo refused comment, saying it was an "internal matter".

Human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa questioned what offence Mabhunu was being charged with.

"There has to be a law saying the toilet is the president's, but this was a public one. They will have had to issue a proclamation in the government gazette specifying it. I bet they didn't do that."

Hayo ndiyo yanayotufanya watanzania tujivunie Tanzania yetu.

Nadhani polisi walifanya kazi yao vizuri.

Kutokana na hii habari Sajenti Mabhunu 'rushed to the first toilet he could see'.

I really hope for Mabhunu that maisha yake yata resume like before...

When the call of nature comes, it cannot always be denied. Few have answered it in such an unfortunate fashion as Alois Mabhunu.
While on duty at a trade fair, the Zimbabwean police sergeant could not hold on and allegedly dashed to the nearest toilet – disastrously, it transpired, as it was reserved for President Robert Mugabe.
He was arrested and imprisoned on suspicion of invading the presidential privy.
The incident happened at the annual Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in the western city of Bulawayo, according to local radio station VOP.
Under the headline "Never Use Toilet Reserved For President!" VOP's website reported that Mabhunu was on duty during the fair's official opening by Mugabe and Jean-Louis Ekra, the president of Afreximbank.
"Mabhunu, due to the call of nature, rushed to the toilets reserved for Mugabe and his guest Ekra, but was stopped by other officers guarding the toilets," VOP said.
"Under intense pressure from the call of nature, the officer forced his way in and managed to relieve himself. He was arrested on 7 May after a report was made to Mugabe's security men and to senior police officers in the city."
Mabhunu, a murder detective, is in police detention at barracks on the outskirts of Bulawayo. The legality of the case against him was challenged by Beatrice Mtetwa, a leading Zimbabwean human rights lawyer.
"There has to be a law saying the toilet is the president's, but this was a public one," she said. "They will have had to issue a proclamation in the government gazette specifying it. I bet they didn't do that."
Mugabe's personal space – and reputation as father of the independent nation – are fiercely protected. Several motorists are said to have been assaulted by his security personnel for not giving way to the presidential motorcade.
In March, Douglas Mwonzora, a leading member of the Movement for Democratic Change, was waiting for a court session to start when he looked at a portrait of Mugabe and said: "How are you, father? How is your health?"
This was greeted with mirth in the courtroom but he was charged with insulting the president, an offence punishable by up to a year in prison.
Another man will go on trial next month charged with posting an offensive message on Facebook. Vikas Mavhudzi allegedly wrote on prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai's 'wall': "What happened in Egypt is sending shockwaves to all dictators around the world. No weapon but unity of purpose. Worth emulating, hey."

Nadhani polisi walifanya kazi yao vizuri.

Sergeant Alois Mabhunu from West Commonage police station in Bulawayo appeared before police internal court at regional headquarters at Southampton House in the city on Tuesday .He was convicted 10 days in prison for using a toilet reserved for Mugabe during Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) early last month. However Mabhunu has since made an appeal to Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri after the police internal court verdict.

A police officer was sentenced last week to 10 days in jail for using a toilet reserved for Robert Mugabe (pictured) at a trade fair.

Harare, Zimbabwe (CNN) -- A police officer in Zimbabwe who has languished at a police detention barracks for a month for using a toilet reserved for President Robert Mugabe will learn his fate at end of this week following an appeal to his boss.
Alois Mabhunu, a homicide detective was sentenced last week to 10 days after he was convicted by an internal police court for responding to a call of nature in a toilet which had been reserved for Mugabe at a trade fair in Zimbabwe's second biggest city.
On Monday, a relative of Mabhunu said the officer was not represented by a lawyer at the hearing, but is hoping the police commissioner-general, Augustine Chihuri, will overturn the guilty verdict this week. He said he had heard that Chihuri will look at the appeal on Thursday or Friday.Besides serving the 10-day sentence, Mabhunu, a homicide detective, has been demoted and will no longer allowed to wear plain clothes.
Contacted for comment, Wayne Bvudzijena police spokesperson on Monday said the issue of Mabhunu was an internal, purely disciplinary matter on which he couldn't comment. Bvudzijen said Mabhunu failed to obey instructions and the law had to take its course.
Mabhunu was part of the security team when Mugabe attended the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair last month. He is alleged to have rushed to the VIP toilets reserved for Mugabe and Jean Louis Ekra, head of the African Export Import Bank, who was participating in the opening ceremonies.
When he was stopped by other officers guarding the toilets, he obliged, but he later forced his way in. The following day he was arrested, he has been in custody since then
