Towards an independent editors forum

EFFORTS at forming a truly independent editors forum in the country are going on. One can see it coming. Saw some of the forums organising committee members last week and in our conversation it was crystal clear that they are up to something good.
In sharp contrast with the past, the new editors forum will be truly independent of influence from some powers that be in the media industry, topnotch politics and big business.
It used to happen in the past that some among the powers-that-be made sure that their voices and wishes were achieved by planting their own aides (wapambe) as the forums top office bearers. This way the so-called big brothers could dictate their own terms to the forum.
That was the kind of forum that could influence a wider section of ladies and gentlemen of the profession of the fourth estate to gag their mouths with plaster and demonstrate in the streets of Dar es Salaam against the information ministers decision to suspend a tabloid that had clearly violated professional ethics in the name of media freedom or independence.
Some of the senior and serious comrades in the profession took the sucker punch and took part in one of the media comedies of recent years. Didnt know until then how hilarious some of my professional colleagues could get.
It is a good thing that some of the colleagues who took part in that media comedy have realised that they did that against their best wisdom. It is always good to realise and appreciate ones mistakes and proceed to make amends.
Soon the forum will conduct elections, which I believe will be free and fair, to elect its new office bearers. It is everyones hope that the powerful ladies and gentlemen who had dictated their own terms during the previous editors forum will refrain from exerting undue influence in those elections.
The new forum will no doubt have the gargantuan task of ensuring professional quality that has been on a sharp decline in recent years. There is need to restore the professions lost old glory and raise it to acceptable standards.
Let it be so.
