A husband is allowed to starve his wife if she refuses to have sex with him under a new law passed in Afghanistan. A woman must also have her husband's permission to work. The bill applies to marital life for the Shia minority in Afghanistan and is seen as attempt by the president Hamid Karzai to gain support from the conservative Shia ahead of this week's election.
An earlier bill asked Shia women to have sex with their husbands every four days at a minimum. It also removed the need for concert to sex within marriage, effectively condoning rape. The amended version has been published in the official gazette and become law.
