Photograph: Jamie Mcdonald/Getty Images Harry Redknapp is refusing to be drawn into mind games with José Mourinho after the Real Madrid manager claimed Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg with Tottenham Hotspur in Spain.
The former World Player of the Year has been suffering with a thigh injury, which prevented him from featuring in Portugal's recent friendlies. Mourinho said he will definitely be without Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, his centre-forward who has a thigh problem, and the left-back Marcelo, who has bruised ribs.
The Madrid manager said: "The medical staff have told me they are only fit for [Athletic] Bilbao [Real's league game that follows the Tottenham match]. Cristiano, Marcelo and Benzema can only play in Bilbao."
His side host Sporting Gijón on Saturday night and asked if he was resting key personnel ahead of Spurs' visit, Mourinho said: "[Saturday's] game is more important than Tottenham. I can't rest anyone. If we lose this, we lose the league. If we lose on Tuesday we can turn things around in London."
When Redknapp was asked about Mourinho's comments the Tottenham manager was unmoved about the possible boost of not having to face Ronaldo. He said: "Is that what he said? Do you think he will? We'll have to see."
Redknapp may be without Gareth Bale and William Gallas due to hamstring and knee problems for Tuesday's match, with both unfit for Saturday's league match at Wigan Athletic. Redknapp was asked if he or Mourinho were engaged in kidology. He said: "No, not with me. We've got Wigan and that is a massive game. We've got to try to get in that top four again. If you were out there in the morning you would have seen William, when he tried to kick the ball he collapsed in pain. He has had two scans this week. I don't know whether he'll need an operation. We've shut him down again until Monday. I'm not kidding anyone about him.
"If Gareth was fit I'd play him against Wigan, but he's not travelling with us. The physio said: 'He's not ready. If you play him tomorrow he could tear that hamstring and he won't play for six or seven weeks.' So you can't even think about that." He said of the two Bale had the better chance of playing on Tuesday.
Redknapp also said he would talk to Rafael van der Vaart regarding the player's decision to walk straight down the tunnel after being substituted during the second half of the goalless home draw against West Ham United two weeks ago. "I don't like anyone walking straight down the tunnel. I've never liked it," he said. "I think players should sit on the bench and watch their team finish the game [as] you're all in it together. I'd find it hard to walk [off], you want to be there and stay with your team, that's how I've always seen it and that's how I want it here."
Redknapp believes that Van der Vaart's fitness is an issue – the Dutchman has played the full 90 minutes in eight of his 26 games for the club. "That is a problem for him – he tires in games at times and you pick up injuries when you get tired. That's why I've played him 65, 70, 75 minutes or whatever. Can he play 90 minutes tomorrow and then play 90 minutes on Tuesday?"

The England striker has first-hand knowledge of those shivers before kick-off having experienced it for Everton.
United have dropped just two points in front of their own fans so far this season, taking 43 points from a possible 45.
Rooney said: "We are always expected to win at home but we always believe we can win, no matter who we play.
"I have been a player in the away dressing room and I know the fear you feel before the game and you are not expected to get anything out of it.
"So we have that psychological advantage even before the game starts but we know we are good enough to beat anyone here."
Rooney has an unusual pre-match ritual as he explained to Inside United.
"The day before a game I always ask Albert (the kitman) which strip we will be wearing - shirt, shorts and socks - so I can try to visualise the game," he said.

AHA! Albert the KIT MAN is their true TALISMAN!!!!!!! LOL

Best, it is a slow day, however we get some good action tommorrow... arsenal, man u & chelsea games all on tv at seperate times.... it will be a fun footy day. And Roo is correct, some teams walk in & are instantly intimidated. If that aura is lost, united will have problems.

Look at chelsea with the "fortress"... people still fear chelsea, but the rep took a hit.

Sandro: 'I told my brother: I'll be the player we should both have been'

The Tottenham midfielder heads for the Real Madrid game driven by a desire to repay his family in Brazil

    Sandro-007.jpg
Sandro could become the first player to win the Copa Libertadores and Champions League within a single European season. Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian It was in the periods of intense loneliness that self-doubt crept in. Sandro Raniere Guimarães Cordeiro would stare out of the window as the rickety bus, one of three the teenager had to take on the tedious two-hour journey to the centre of excellence each morning, weaved its way tortuously into Curitiba. Thoughts would drift to friends and family in distant Planaltina, a small town outside Brasilia 700 miles to the north, his focus distracted momentarily from the task ahead: impressing at the day's trials to forge himself a career.
Such was the 16-year-old's daily routine over two long months. Visiting scouts would scrutinise the youngsters on show, offering contracts to those who caught the eye. Atlético Paranaense warmed to the aggressive midfielder from the Minas Gerais province, only to have second thoughts. Contemporaries were snapped up, leaving Sandro behind. "I'd sit there asking myself: 'What am I doing here, in the middle of nowhere, miles from home? Why did I bother?'" he says. "But I knew I couldn't give up. I'd said I would only return when I had money to help my father and mother and, in the back of my mind, there was always my brother. I was living his dream, too. That gave me the strength never to give up."
That was a little over five years ago. Next week, Sandro will confront Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, travelling to Spain as a Brazil international, a Copa Libertadores winner and with his reputation at Tottenham Hotspur established by his smothering of Milan. Already he feels a steal at £6.5m, the 22-year-old following such talents as Alexandre Pato and Lúcio by progressing from Internacional Porto Alegre to Europe. Falcão, an icon at the Brazilian Inter then Roma, believes Sandro will be Brazil's regular No5, while Dunga considered him a future captain. The player describes the last few years as "a whirlwind" with each setback, and there have been some, brushed off: "I know I've already lived through the hardest part."
Sandro visited the Vale Resource Base at Northumberland Park Community School this week, spending time with a group of disabled children who, with the help of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, are competing for Haringey in a variety of disability sports in the Panathlon Challenge. The Brazilian was visibly moved by those he met, though his own story is similarly inspirational. It might not have been like this. Growing up in the small town of Riachinho, it had been his brother who was considered the prospect. Saymon was two years Sandro's senior and their father Juaci, a bricklayer, spent what money he could on boots and shin pads. Yet Saymon's dreams were to be dashed.
"In Brazil, a father's first present to his son is always a football," Sandro says. "Saymon and I would play in the streets in Riachinho, but the family concentrated on him, the eldest, and there were clubs chasing him. Then the doctors diagnosed a heart problem. They didn't know whether it was life-threatening, but it would be too dangerous for him to carry on playing. It was so hard on him, to give it all up… he was devastated and it affected the whole family. But seeing how he suffered was extra motivation for me. I told him: 'Don't worry, my brother. I'm going to do this for both of us. I will become the footballer we should both have been.'
"We moved nearer Brasilia so my brother could receive treatment and, even though we never had much money, my family never let me give up on my dream. My brother would work to buy me boots. My father would scrape together money for me to take the buses to Gama, a club in the city, but there were no prospects of making it there. They did not even pay expenses. I had to take a chance by leaving alone for the trialists' academy in Curitiba. The pocket money I got there paid for my transport to and from the centre. They supplied the kit, the manager gave me food and lodgings, and I had a phonecard to call my family. I suffered, miles from home, while everyone else was signed by clubs. But I knew it would happen.
"A small team called Astral eventually gave me an opportunity, but it wasn't until we played Grêmio in the São Paulo Cup that Internacional saw me. They invited me to Porto Alegre for a trial, but I had a groin injury when I got there and it took over six weeks to heal. Every day, the pressure grew. I knew the coaches were thinking: 'This kid's just wasting our time.' They'd not even seen me play, but my agent saved me, telling them to be patient. They didn't regret waiting. I was playing in their first team within two years."
Physically imposing and comfortable on the ball, Sandro oozed authority in the reserve team before graduating to the seniors at 18. The national set-up had already recognised his talent and he captained Brazil's Under-20s to success in the South American Youth Championships in Venezuela in February 2009. Seven months later he was a full international, the youngest of the 88 players called up by Dunga in his four-year stewardship. In Inter's first team the midfielder established a fearsome partnership with Pablo Guiñazú, a goateed, shaven-headed Argentinian whose nomadic career has spanned five countries. If the snarling Guiñazú was the destroyer, then Sandro was a more progressive force at his side, an interceptor rather than aggressor. "We were crazy mad dogs," he says. "On the pitch Pablo was frightening."
Internacional went unbeaten through the group stage of the 2010 Copa Libertadores with Spurs, their strategic partnership with the Brazilian club established, long since alerted to the dynamic midfielder emerging through the ranks. Agreement was reached last March for Sandro to transfer to White Hart Lane once Inter's Libertadores campaign had concluded. The player's room-mate Gonzalo Sorondo, previously of Crystal Palace and Charlton, would tell him about life in London. "He'd joke in English, though I never knew what he was on about," says Sandro. Harry Redknapp must have envisaged having him in his squad for pre-season. As it was, Inter would claim the trophy for the second time in four years, delaying Sandro's arrival until the end of August.
Their progress in the competition was as unlikely as Spurs' in the Champions League. A two-goal deficit was overturned against Banfield before the holders, Estudiantes, were eliminated – again on away goals – in the quarter‑finals. "Any meeting between a Brazilian side and a team from Argentina is unbelievable," Sandro says. "The noise, the tension, the passion … Everyone underestimated us. Estudiantes were sure they'd knock us out easily. São Paulo in the semis thought we'd roll over. But we would not give up. Halfway through the campaign I knew I was joining Spurs, so every game I played was potentially my last. But the dream went on and on. The final against Guadalajara was a chance to say goodbye in [the Estádio] Beira-Rio in front of 56,000, holding aloft that trophy. After that I could leave with my head held high.
"I'd watched how Tottenham had qualified for Europe, so I travelled to England looking forward to playing in the Premier League but also in the Champions League, the best competition in the world. But, when I got to London, the manager told me he hadn't put my name down in his European squad. I accepted it, but it was like a cold shower after everything that had happened: the Copa Libertadores, Brazil, the move to England. I was really disappointed, I'll confess, but I had to accept it.
"He told me I could still accompany the team on away trips in Europe to get to know everybody. But, ahead of the first game at Werder Bremen, the fitness trainer told me the day before the team was flying that I had to stay and work on my conditioning. My English was not good and I was confused because the manager had said I could go to watch the team. So I checked, with Heurelho Gomes and then my interpreter, and they came back with different answers. Something had got lost in translation. So I turned up at Stansted airport bright and early the next day and the man checking us in went down the list, saying: 'What is your name again? Sandro? Sandro … no, you're not down.' They had to leave me behind. It was so embarrassing."
He buries his head in his hands at the memory, though his painful adaptation period was not confined to an airport check-in lounge. Premier League starts were rare, his impact nullified by the jolt to the system of life in alien surroundings. Gomes was a support. So, too, were other compatriots, such as Chelsea's Ramires. Observers wondered if all this had come too soon, though it is testament to how swiftly Sandro has actually settled that Jermaine Jenas recently described him as a dressing‑room joker. Yet Redknapp needed more persuasion. The manager had explored the possibility of signing Phil Neville in the January window and, had he been prised from Everton, Sandro might not have made the revamped Champions League squad.
Tottenham will be grateful they gave him his chance. There had been only three domestic league starts when injuries demanded his inclusion against Milan but his displays against the Italians, cutting off the supply-line to Clarence Seedorf and suffocating the Rossoneri's menace, took the breath away. The physicality of football at this level suits him – he laughs off the gouge in his leg, now scabbed over, inflicted by a horrible Carlton Cole tackle in the derby with West Ham – and his energy and anticipation offer reassurance. Against Milan's wizened campaigners, his performance belied his tender years.
From Riachinho to Real, José Mourinho's Madrid await on Tuesday, the next step in a staggering journey. The Spanish, he says, "must not be feared". Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Angel di María may be some of the world's best, "but Tottenham deserve to be where we are". "I'm still pinching myself that this is all real," he says. "But I gave everything. Looking back, all the sacrifices my family and I made, they were all worth it. I always believed, even if I didn't think things would happen so quickly. My brother is proud, too. He told me to be patient when I was not in the team at Tottenham, that my time would come. He's happy for me."
Saymon is in the process of applying for his passport back in Brazil but still hopes to experience an away tie in the Champions League. "It will not arrive in time for Madrid," Sandro says, "but he will have it when we play Barcelona [in the semi-finals]." That was said with a smile, but no one has ever won a Copa Libertadores and Champions League within the calendar of a single European season, and Sandro is a player in a hurry.
The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation aims to Create Opportunities that Change Lives for people in the community. Sandro appeared at the Vale School in Tottenham to support the charity's partnership with Panathlon.

United chief ponders Rio dilemma

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has not entirely ruled Rio Ferdinand out of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Chelsea.
But the deposed England captain is more likely to return from injury next weekend.
Ferdinand has not made an appearance since suffering a calf problem in the warm-up prior to the Premier League defeat at Wolves at the beginning of February.
So slow had been the 32-year-old's progress that Ferguson had raised doubts over his ability to get back on the pitch before the end of the season.
However, Ferdinand has resumed training this week and, so far, come through without a reaction.
It leaves Ferguson with a dilemma about whether to push Ferdinand through another session on Saturday - when his team-mates are tackling West Ham at Upton Park - in the knowledge that if he comes through without a hitch, he could be rushed back to face Carlo Ancelotti's men, or hold him back until next week, meaning it will be the Premier League encounter with Fulham that will mark his return.
"Rio has started training," said Ferguson. "He has only been training two days and then just a light session today.
"I have to decide whether we bring in him tomorrow, or give him a day off and start him on Wednesday again. He is more likely to be fit for Fulham."
Yet Ferguson may ultimately conclude it is worth taking a gamble given none of his other injured defenders will be back to face Chelsea, whilst a few may be available for Fulham.
Rafael, John O'Shea and Wes Brown could all tackle Mark Hughes' men. But none of that trio will make the trip to Stamford Bridge, when Jonny Evans will be available as he serves a three-match domestic ban.
None of this helps his team selection for Saturday, when Ferguson accepts filling the right-back slot is going to be a major issue.
"We have to solve that and find the right solution," he said.
It seems almost certain Brazilian Fabio will fill the void, with Chris Smalling partnering skipper Nemanja Vidic in central defence.
At least Ferguson finally has options in midfield.
Park Ji-sung could make his first start since he left for Asian Cup duty in Qatar, whilst Anderson is likely to be on the bench at Upton Park after recovering from a knee injury it was initially suggested would rule him out for the season.
However, Darren Fletcher is still troubled by a virus, whilst Owen Hargreaves' United career now looks to be at an end following the shoulder problem he picked up in training.
"It is another huge setback for the lad," said Ferguson.

    Sir-Alex-Ferguson-respect-007.jpg
Sir Alex Ferguson has accused Richard Scudamore of 'jumping off a high diving board without thinking about it'. Photograph: Mike Stobe/Getty Images Sir Alex Ferguson has derided the thinking behind plans to increase the Respect campaign, criticising the scheme before it has begun and taking a thinly veiled swipe at the Premier League's chief executive, Richard Scudamore, in the process.
Ferguson is unimpressed by Scudamore's announcement that greater efforts need to be taken to punish managers and players for "unacceptable behaviour" towards match officials from next season, a decision based in part on the controversies that have attached themselves to Manchester United's manager.
The Football Association has charged Ferguson with disciplinary offences five times in as many years and he is serving a record five-match touchline ban for saying Martin Atkinson should not have been appointed for United's game at Chelsea last month because the match deserved "a fair referee".
Ferguson continues to feel aggrieved that he was punished unduly and there was a withering response when he was asked about Scudamore's proposal to toughen up the scheme.
"Richard Scudamore has not got a lot to do, has he?" Ferguson remarked pointedly. "I do think Richard is jumping off a high board here – a high diving board – without thinking about it. He is trying to elevate the Premier League and fine; that's good and that's his job but I don't think that managers do disrespect referees.
"I got done for what I consider to be fair comment. They [the FA] didn't and I got a five-match ban and that's fine but that is not to say we don't respect referees. It's a difficult job and we all know that. You wouldn't referee a game, would you? Neither would I and we do need them."
Ferguson will serve the second match of his ban at West Ham on Saturday in a game in which he may be forced to play Fábio da Silva, a reserve left-back, at right-back because of an injury pile-up that he admitted had been "causing me nightmares".
There are similarities with United's visit to Upton Park last season when they were left with eight injured defenders and Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs all played emergency roles in the back four. The situation is not so dire this time but Rafael da Silva, Wes Brown and John O'Shea are definitely missing and, though there is a more positive diagnosis of Rio Ferdinand's calf problem, his return is likely to be against Fulham next weekend, with a marginal chance of his being involved in the Champions League quarter-final at Chelsea on Wednesday.
Ferdinand had been aggrieved by Ferguson's recent assertion that he might miss the rest of the season when, as the Guardian revealed, the injury is not as serious as had been made out.
Fletcher, who can fill in at right-back, is still troubled by a virus while Jonny Evans is suspended, the luckless Owen Hargreaves is recovering from damaging his shoulder and Gary Neville's retirement – the club are talking to Juventus about an end-of-season testimonial – has left United short of other options.
Raymond Verheijen, a Dutch fitness conditioning expert working with the Wales national team, with previous spells at Manchester City and Chelsea, recently spoke of his belief that United's fitness staff have "messed up". Ferguson, however, believes it is "bad luck" rather than maltreatment that left him with 11 players injured at one point a few weeks ago.
When United won the Treble in 1999 they had a virtually injury-free squad but Ferguson said: "The kind of games Manchester United are playing today are far more competitive than they were in 1999. The speed of the game has increased, the standard of training and pitches has improved, so everything's faster. The game is quicker and therefore you run the risk of injury because of that."

Ancelotti attended Brazil's 2-0 friendly win against Scotland on Sunday, in which Neymar scored both goals.
The 19-year-old Santos striker was reportedly the subject of a failed bid by Chelsea last summer and his value has undoubtedly gone up following his man-of-the-match performance at the Emirates Stadium.
He said afterwards, "it's a dream of every player to play at Chelsea", reiterating comments he had made earlier in the season.
Ancelotti said this morning: "It's good news because it's good for the club and the manager if players want to come here.
"It shows the rumours are true there's a good atmosphere here.
"He's very young, a fantastic talent.
"At this moment, we're not interested."
Assessing Neymar's performance on Sunday, Ancelotti - who also watched Chelsea midfielder Ramires play a starring role - added: "It was a good performance, but the best player on the pitch was Ramires - 100%."
As well as appearing to court Chelsea, Neymar has also said he would love to play for Barcelona but insisted he intended to see out his contract at Santos, which expires in 2014.

African Lyon, JKT Ruvu heshima Ligi Kuu

Arsène Wenger says it is up to England not to burn out Jack Wilshere

• Arsenal's manager fears youngster could be overloaded
• Concern at repeat of Theo Walcott's Under-21 experience

    Jack-Wilshere-007.jpg
Jack Wilshere wants to play in the Under-21 European Championship but Arsène Wenger is against it. Photograph: Michael Regan/FA via Getty Images Arsène Wenger has warned Fabio Capello that he would harm England's chances of Euro 2012 success if he sanctioned Jack Wilshere's release to Under-21 duty at the end of the season.
Wilshere has emerged as a key player for Arsenal and England yet he remains eligible for Stuart Pearce's Under-21 squad, which will compete in the European Championship in Denmark in June. Pearce wants to select Wilshere as part of his plan to win the tournament and the midfielder has expressed his desire to play, which Wenger accepts as "normal". Capello will support Pearce's decision.
Wenger, though, worries about "overloading" young players – Wilshere stands to feature in 61 matches at all levels this season – and his club manager likened fears over his burn-out to watching a car crash.
Wenger was also clearly unhappy that Wilshere was one of only three outfield players to start for Capello's England in the qualifying tie against Wales last Saturday and then the friendly against Ghana on Tuesday. "A lot happened last week that defied common sense but I do not want to talk about that," Wenger said.
To Wenger the issue over Wilshere echoes that of Theo Walcott, when the Arsenal winger played for both Capello's and Pearce's England teams at the end of a busy 2008-09 season. Walcott even suffered the indignity of being dropped by Pearce during the Under-21 finals in Sweden. Walcott would be dogged by injuries in 2009-10 and Capello overlooked him for the World Cup finals in South Africa.
Wenger sounded a little weary with the talking point and he said that he did not "want to go into these battles any more." His priority was for Wilshere to help Arsenal win the Premier League title and he said that the international issue would be resolved "at the end of the season with the FA". Wenger would "adapt to what they [the FA] do," yet he was determined to protect Wilshere.
"Experience helps you only to anticipate problems," Wenger said. "It doesn't make you more intelligent. You know this car will hit the wall at some stage and you see it a little bit earlier than somebody who has less experience. I think, in the world, nobody has brought more young players out than I have and I have a good experience of what kind of stages they go through.
"I've met players at World Cups who have played more than 60 games in a season and before the World Cup started, they said to me: 'Boss, I am dead.' You prepare for a European Championship a year before. You do not prepare in May or in June before the competition.
"England have to decide what to do … and they have the final word because they have the rules for them. What is important is that England has a good player, Arsenal has a good player and the player has the needed rest to produce good performances."
Wenger is worried that the FA is basing its Under-21 selection on the wrong criteria. "If England want to do well in the Under-21 tournament, they can say, 'We take our best players and we do not consider what happened before,'" Wenger said. "But logically, why do you produce a youth system? It is to get them ready to play in the first team.
"Once they play in the first team, your job has been done and you can promote other players. Unless you say, 'We want to go for national pride and ego, so we just play our best players in the tournament.' Then it is defendable. If I asked you to give me the winners of the World Cup, I am sure you will give me them all. If I asked you to give me the winners of the Under-21 tournaments, you will struggle.
"It is in the interests of the FA as well that Wilshere is protected. It is normal that you play many games but there is a number you have to respect and make sure you do not make a mistake with a promising player."
Arsenal resume their quest for the title at home to Blackburn Rovers, with Wenger able to welcome back Cesc Fábregas, Alex Song, Walcott and Abou Diaby from injuries. Robin van Persie is also fit after suffering a knock with Holland during the international break. The goalkeeper Manuel Almunia keeps his place. "We had a difficult March on all fronts," Wenger said, "so now it's a new start for us."
He revealed that the central defender Johan Djourou was in line to return sooner than expected from his shoulder injury. "On Monday he should go out [to train] and two weeks later he should play," Wenger said.

The £50million January departure of striker Fernando Torres to Chelsea was initially seen as a long-term blow but his sale allowed the Reds to buy Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.
Already the pair have shown plenty of desire and commitment - something which Torres lacked in his final few months at Anfield - and have lessened the impact of the Spain international leaving.
Director of football Damien Comolli has said he expects to have a busy summer in terms of recruitment but that is not necessarily at the expense of the current squad and the Frenchman successfully negotiated a new contract with midfielder Lucas this week.
Dalglish said they will continue to look after those players who have something to offer as the club looks to rebuild in the coming months.
"It is important if they are good players," said the Scot, whose appointment as permanent boss edged closer with the Brazil international's signature on a long-term deal - another pointer towards what now appears inevitable.
"The longer the deal is the happier we will be but the quality of the player is the important thing.
"For us we don't want to lose who we think are important people to the club."
Carroll and Suarez certainly fall into that category, having signed five-year contracts in January, and are expected to provide the firepower in the Reds' bid to catch fifth-placed Tottenham.

cheers Spidie, good talent we'll see what the scot and french man come up with. With so many names being flung around it all seems to be cover for the deal(s) they really want. 3 Fullbacks (mostly left sided), 4 Wings and 3 Strikers and lately 3 Center backs so it should be interesting. I just hope its not play what I brought you on Comolli's part. As long as Kenny (the manager in the new structure) has a say in the top 2 or 3 names for the position, I'm hopeful we'll see good pickups this summer.

"Moro United ina dhamira ya dhati kuhakikisha inafanya vizuri kwenye ligi, ndiyo maana tunajipanga kila idara kuhakikisha mambo yanakuwa mazuri," alisema Mido.
