Malawi to overturn homosexual ban, Joyce Banda says

Joyce Banda is doing her best to get donor funding restored to Malawi

President Joyce Banda has said she wants Malawi to overturn its ban on homosexual acts - the first African country to do so since 1994.

Two Malawian men were sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2010 after saying they were getting married.

Several Western leaders have recently said they would cut aid to countries which did not recognise gay rights.

Mrs Banda took power last month after her predecessor, Bingu wa Mutharika, died of a heart attack. She has since reversed several of his policies, including devaluing the currency, in a bid to get donor funding restored.

Many donors cut aid under Mr Mutharika, accusing him of economic mismanagement and political repression.
In her first state of the nation address to parliament, Mrs Banda said: "Some laws which were duly passed by the august house... will be repealed as a matter of urgency... these include the provisions regarding indecent practices and unnatural acts."

I respected and acknowledged Bakili Muluzi on how he had handled the case and his firm stand against foreign intrude on the matter; as much as the subjects were later on freed. I wonder with this pace if we as Africans will have any true ethnic values to call our own in the future...

Malawi's new President Joyce Banda has said she does not want Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir, accused of war crimes, to attend a summit in July.

She says she fears the "economic implications" if Mr Bashir attends the African Union meeting in Malawi.

Her predecessor, Bingu wa Mutharika, who died last month, last year defied calls to apprehend Mr Bashir.

"Let the AU decide on his position. He [Bashir] should forgive us this time as we are struggling to fix the economy," the Reuters news agency quotes her as saying.

Going to the extrems of banning Mr. Bashir's attendence on such a major International meeting is an official mark that she a kaput to whatever is demanded of her by her own stamp of desperation.... Nchi kama Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia na Botswana ni baadhi ya nchi chache Africa ambazo wananchi wake waliwekewa mazingira ya kuonesha kua wao things of interest in the nation ni yale tu ambayo yanahusiana na their immediate welfate... Wahakikishe wanafanya kazi, they provide for their family na kufutatilia mengine kama entertainment za football ama mengine. Politics ilikua inaongelewa na wazee tu! Na ni kitu ambacho kinahusu viongozi wa nchi.... This mentallity has cost us...

At present Tanzania tupo vizuri zaidi kimwamko wa Siasa kuliko hata Malawi.... ambao kama sisi wa Tz ama Wa Zambia wameanza mda sio mrefu kujua kua Siasa ni part ya kila mmoja na everyone has the right to know, be updated and speak their belief. Ukitaka uelewe hii tunaangalia majirani zetu Kenya na attitude yao towards politics.... then unapata picha.
