[TD="class: news, align: left"]ddis Ababa, April 26, 2012 (Addis Ababa) - Construction of the 80-km Addis Ababa-Adama Expressway, the first expressway in the country, launched with over eight billion Birr is well in progress, the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) said.
Communication Director with ERA, Samson Wondimu told ENA on Thursday that over 33.6 per cent of the construction of the Expressway has so far been completed.
The expressway is being constructed by a Chinese Communications Construction Corporation (CCCC).
In addition to its socio–economic benefits, the road will have a significant contribution in alleviating traffic jam and road accidents.
The expressway will have exits at every town along the route and also interchange roads.
The expressway, which is part of the five-year Growth and Transformation Plan, will significantly contribute to growth of the export sector through connecting Addis Ababa with Djibouti Port, he said.
Construction of the expressway launched in April, 2010 is expected to be finalized in two years.
The construction cost of the expressway is covered by the Ethiopian government and loan obtained from Exim Bank of China.
There is a plan to construct similar expressway from Adama to Awash in the future.
Adama is located southeast of Addis Ababa.
