Tanzania’s Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman may be the man to prosecute the six Kenyans accused of bearing the greatest responsibility for the post election violence.

He is among four people seeking to succeed outgoing ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo.

Mr Chande is among the four candidates shortlisted by the ICC Search Committee in line to succeed Mr Moreno-Ocampo mid next year.

The new prosecutor will be elected by the Assembly of State Parties to the Rome Statute at its next meeting to be held starting December 12 but will officially assume office in July 2012.

The new prosecutor will be elected by the Assembly of State Parties to the Rome Statute at its next meeting to be held starting December 12 but will officially assume office in July 2012.
Also in the race to succeed to Mr Ocampo is his current deputy, Gambian Fatou Bensouda, Mr Andrew T Cayley (UK) and Canadian Robert Petit.
The Ocampo Six are deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Eldoret North MP William Ruto, Public Service head Francis Muthaura, Tinderet MP Henry Kosgey, former Police commissioner Hussein Ali and radio presenter Joshua Sang.
The pre-trial chamber of the ICC is set to rule on whether to confirm or drop the charges facing them between December and January.
Mr Cayley is the International Co-Prosecutor of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) while Mr Petit is currently the Counsel to the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Sections of the Department of Justice in his home country.
The four were picked from a pool of 52 candidates who applied for the job. From the 52 names on the candidates list, the Search Committee interviewed only eight candidates before settling on the four.
"In presenting this shortlist, the Search Committee is confident that each of the candidates identified below not only meets the formal eligibility criteria of the Rome Statute but also has the professional experience and expertise, and the necessary personal qualities, to perform the role of the next ICC Prosecutor to the highest standard," said the President of the Assembly of State Parties, Christian Wenaweser who acted as the coordinator of the search committee..

MY TAKE
How will the case affect the relations between Kenya and Tanzania in EAC knowing that the Ocampo 6 are heavy weights in Kenya's Political inner cycle and being aware that Omary Chande will be coming straight from his CJ position (under JK directives) which he will have to quit if elected the prosecutor of PEV suspects!

Nafasi ambazo amewahi kushika kwenye UN ni pamoja na Prosecutor to the International Criminal Courts (at the Rwanda war crimes tribunal) , Prosecutor-General with the U.N. transitional administration in East Timor. He presently is a Senior Advisor on Human Rights to the UN.

So, ana uzoefu kushughulika na masuala ya kimataifa.
