The Director of Information, Mr Assah Mwambene, said in Dar es Salaam on Friday that on Thursday, the tabloid carried a story which was maliciously designed to incite the people against the government
and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
In its June 6-12, issue number 0046, the tabloid carried a story on its front page with a headline reading:
Madhehebu ya Kikristo Kuitenga Serikali meaning Christian denominations to abandon the government.
The newspaper added that effective next month, all Christian clerics including bishops and pastors would be delivering special messagesagainst the government and CCM.
We are doing this because CCM has mishandled the country and enabled Chadema to take charge, according to the article without attributing the claims to any sources.
The tabloid also carried photographs of the Catholic Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, Polycarp Cardinal Pengo and Bishop Alex Malasusa of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT). Articles of this kind are very bad and dangerous.
We are going to take punitive measures against the publishers. We have summoned the publishers to report at Maelezo (Information Services Department) on Monday.
We have also directed them to apologise immediately, Mr Mwambene said.
