.... It is only right, therefore, that we should first remind ourselves what kind of a Tanzania we intend to build. What is the basic principle on which our young country is founded? At the time when we were still demanding our right to freedom we made this absolutely clear.
The principle on which we stood, and on which we stand today, is the principle of human rights. It is the dignity and well being of all our people which are the beginning and the end of all our efforts. For the freedom we demanded was not mere independence from colonialism/ what we sought was personal freedom for all the people of Tanzania; freedom for every individual, and the chance to make use of that freedom, in cooperation with his fellows to provide for his own needs and theirs and so to live a life of human dignity.
We determined to build a country in which all her citizens are equal; where there is no division into rulers and rules, rich and poor, educated and illiterate, those in distress and those in idle comfort.
We determined that in this country all would be equal in dignity; all would have and equal right to respect, to the opportunity of acquiring a good education and the necessities of life; and all her citizens should have an equal opportunity of serving their country to the limit of their ability.
This, then, is the Tanzania we intend to build; but is not the kind of country we have inherited. The Tanzania we have inherited from colonialism was one in which the injustices of colonial days still survived; in which there was racial discrimination; and from which the degradation and evils which sprang from colonialism had yet to be banished. ..
Yesterday I took an oath. I swore that as a President of the Republic of Tanzania I would do my duty and carry out my work without fear or favor, affection or ill-will towards anyone. That was no hollow formula, to be spoken and forgotten. It was a most solemn promise, made before Almighty God, that with His help I shall prove myself worthy of the responsibility which you the people of Tanzania have entrusted to me; that I shall strive to fulfill the task laid upon me, without permitting myself to be influence by any personal likes or dislikes, no by consideration of my own comfort a or convenience.
I say I swore. But in actual fact it is true to say that WE swore; for I took that oath on your behalf. Every citizen of Tanzania, whether he be the President, a politician, a civil servant, a farmer, a teacher, or the lowest-paid worker in the land, every single one of us has equal duty to do the work entrusted to him whatever that work may be as if he too had taken a solemn oath to devote himself, without thought for his own advantage, to building our new Republic of Tanzania.
You are not going to get an argument from me on this one. It is another universally aspired principle. I don't know of any nation that seeks the opposite. Next Fikra please....
Mzee umefanya kosa moja kubwa; unaangalia hotuba hiyo ukiwa mwaka 2008 and hence you are missing how groundbreaking and earth shaking that speech was in 1962.
In 1962 - Watu weusi Marekani walikuwa hawapigi kura (sheria ya kuwaruhusu ilikuwa 1964)
In 1962 - Nchi kadhaa bado zilikuwa makoloni ikiwemo jirani zetu Uganda..
In 1962 - Hotuba ya MLK "I have a dream" ambapo anarudia mawazo haya haya ya Mwalimu ya usawa ilikuwa haijatolewa
In 1962 - Nelson Mandela ambaye naye alitoa hotuba yake ya usawa wa watu wote halikuwa hajatoa utetezi wake kwenye kesi yake Mahakama Kuu ya Pretoria (ambapo yeye mwenyewe alimshukuru Nyerere kwa mchango wake) aliitoa in 1964.
Hivyo, ingawa leo tunaangalia in 20/20 na kuiona ni hotuba ya kawaida kiukweli he was far ahead of his time na hilo naona hutaki kuliangalia kwa vile leo we take for granted kwamba "ni universal principle", at the time it was earth shaking!
Hahahahahahaaaa....kweli leo Ijumaa! Eti earth shaking...hahaha...wewe kweli unampenda Mwalimu..Loh!
Man, stop playing...next "FIKRA" please...
Nyani umekuwa ukiuliza alikuwa the first one.. ku articulate.. hujanionesha mwingine aliyefanya hivyo kabla yake kutoka Africa (labda Senghor, mwanafalsafa mwingine).
Mzee yaani huamini zilikuwa earth shaking? Hivi unakumbuka kwanini hawa jamaa walianzisha civil rights movement? Kwanini watu waliuawa Soweto? yes the ideas were revolutionary kama zingetolewa Africa ya Kusini au Marekani at the time.. hii hotuba ingekuwa at par au zaidi ya hotuba ya MLK!
Mkuu wangu MMJ,
Otherwise, unaweza kuendelea.
Mimi sijali eneo zilipotolewa. Inaweza ikawa zilitolewa India au hata Albania...ili mradi zilitolewa duniani...that's what I care. DuBois alizungumzia hayo...Garvey...Gandhi....Mandela hakuanza harakati zake kizimbani...MLK hakuanza harakati zake na I have a dream....so what's your point really?
Wait a minute....nabishana na wewe kuhusu Nyerere...I forgot...I can't win that battle. I give up....next earth shaking "FIKRA" please....
Geez!! I said you are not going to get an argument from me on "FIKRA" number #2. I wholeheartedly agree with it. Everything that he said in the speech I agree with.
My friend, on this one we are on the same page and reading the same script. All I'm saying is what he said in a speech is what most human beings, yes including dictators, aspire. The idea was true at the beginning and will be so in the end (if there is one).
Oh Lord! What did I get myself into..?
hahahahaa... nadhani ninaoverread kitu mtu anasema.. sorry. Well nasubiri waheshimiwa wengine waseme wanapinga nini kwenye fikra hii angalau mwenzangu tuko page moja.
Nimesema alichosema jukwaani hakukifanya uani!
