MY TAKE
TCAA should sabotage this new partnership between KQ and condor! KQ should not be allowed to ferry passengers onwards to Tanzanian markets on feeder mode from JKIA considering they have blocked Tanzanian vans accessing JKIA. TCAA should be strict on this

  • This is as a result of a communication from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority reducing flight frequencies of Kenyan carriers into Tanzania.
  • The airline is currently facing increased pressure from gulf airlines on its African routes.

Kenya Airways has reduced the number of flights to Dar es Salaam after Tanzania imposed frequency restrictions over a diplomatic row between the two countries.

The national carrier, which on Tuesday retired 10 of its senior pilots in an attempt to cut down losses, said in a statement that it was reducing its weekly flights to Tanzania from 42 to 14 effective immediately.

"Kenya Airways wishes to notify its customers that it has reduced its frequencies to Dar es Salaam from 42 to 14 per week and will now only fly twice daily from March 19th March 2015.

"This is as a result of a communication from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) reducing flight frequencies of Kenyan carriers into Tanzania," it said.

The airline's announcement comes as officials from the Kenyan government reached out to their Tanzanian counterparts with a view to resolving the impasse.

The airline is currently facing increased pressure from gulf airlines on its African routes. Last year it was also forced to stop flying to a number of West African routes following the outbreak of Ebola

Kenya cuts flights to Tanzania

The Guardian Reporter
Two days after the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) imposed restrictions on a number of flights operated by Kenya Airways to Dar es Salaam the airline has responded positively by reducing its flights.

According to the information published by the Daily Nation, the Kenyan newspaper, Kenya Airways began flying to Dar es Salaam twice daily from Thursday this week.

According to the newspaper, the statement issued by the management of the airline said it would reduce the number of flights from Kenya to Tanzania from 42 to 14 a week.

Tuesday this week, the airline was forced to retire ten of its senior pilots as part of the measures to cut down operation cost.
However, the newspaper did not state whether the decision by Kenya Airways to send home ten pilots was taken after the TCAA imposed restrictions on the number of flights.

"Kenya Airways wishes to notify its customers that it has reduced its frequencies to Dar es Salaam from 42 to 14 per week and will now only fly twice daily from March 19th 2015.

"This is as a result of a communication from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) reducing flight frequencies of Kenyan carriers into Tanzania," The Daily Nation quoted the statement issued by Kenya Airways.
According to the newspaper, officials from the Kenyan government have reached out to their counterparts in Tanzania with a view to resolving the impasse.

The airline is facing increased pressure from gulf airlines on its African routes. Last year, it was also forced to stop flying to a number of West African routes following the outbreak of Ebola in that region.
The decision by TCAA has come at times when Kenya and Tanzania are still at loggerheads over ban that Kenya authorities imposed on Tanzanian vehicles that were dropping or picking tourists at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Until now the ban has not been lifted, a decision that was vehemently protested by Tanzania government. Many consider the restrictions on flights imposed by TCAA as a revenge for Kenya's decision to ban shuttles from Tanzania from accessing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
However, TCAA has defended its decision, attributing it to the deadlock surrounding what is known in the aviation industry as Bilateral Air Services Agreement (Basa) between Kenya and Tanzania.

Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BSA) is an agreement which two nations sign to allow international commercial air transport services between their territories
TCAA Acting Director General Charles Chacha told one of the newspapers in Dar es Salaam mid this week that the two countries have gone without such an aviation agreement for two years now.

According to Chacha, each country is supposed to adhere to the laws and principles operating in a given country.

There are reports that individuals engaging in flower business in Arusha region might suffer as they depend much on KQ to transport their products to the outside world, let alone the transport services offered by the airline to Tanzanians.

KQ to fly to Dar only twice a day as Nairobi complies

IN SUMMARY

  • Kenya Airways has reduced the number of flights to Dar es Salaam from 42 to only 14 a week with effect from March 19

Dar es Salaam/Nairobi. Amid blames to Fasjet Airline, Kenya Airways (KQ) yesterday announced to reduce flights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam from five to only two a day.

The KQ announcement means that the company has complied with the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority's (TCAA) directive issued on March 17 to the government of Kenya.

According to the statement released by KQ, the company has reduced the number of flights to Dar es Salaam with effect from March 19.
Earlier, KQ was flying five times a day from Nairobi to Dar es Salam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro, but with TCAA decision, the airline will now fly only twice a day.

"Kenya Airways wishes to notify its customers that it has reduced its frequencies to Dar es Salaam from 42 to 14 per week and will now only fly twice daily from March 19th, 2015," reads part of the statement.

The statement added that TCAA has reached the decision following the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) issue and that it was aware the matter was being negotiated between the two governments.

"We are aware that relevant Kenya government agencies have reached out to their Tanzanian counterparts in a bid to resolve the issue," reads part of the statement.

The statement further read that KQ was aware that transport was a critical pillar in the integration of the East African Community.

It called for the speedy resolution of the pending issues pertaining to the BASA since it was crucial in fast-tracking regional integration.
Is Fast Jet the main course?

Though there have been speculations in Kenya that TCAA's decision was in response to denying landing rights to Fastjet- one of the directors who spoke withThe Citizen on Saturday yesterday stated clearly that what happened was a matter of principles and regulations.
Fastjet was unable to secure a licence to operate from Nairobi in 2013.

Our sister paper, the Daily Nation, yesterday reported that failure by the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority to grant landing rights to Fasjet was the main reason behind Tanzania's move to reduce KQ flights by almost 60 per cent.

But, one of the Fastjet directors who spoke with The Citizen on Saturday yesterday under the conditions of anonymity because he isn't the official spokesperson dismissed the claims, saying aviation frequencies wasn't a matter of Fast Jet and KQ, but were subject to agreements between the two countries-Kenya and Tanzania.

"It's true that we were denied landing rights in Nairobi under very shaky grounds because while Kenya claimed Fastjet was a foreign owned airline, the very same country had granted Air Uganda-which is wholly owned by a foreign investor-to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport," the director said

He added, "It seemed, we as Tanzania, are being treated as second class member of the EAC by Kenya…If the issue was foreign ownership, why did Kenya grant permission to Air Uganda to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport?"

"We were denied that right one year ago…we accepted it and moved on to operate in other countries like Uganda where we have been granted landing rights; therefore blaming Fastjet for issues which are handled between the two countries is baseless," he told The Citizen on Saturday over the phone.

"What Kenya did against Fastjet was purely a matter of protectionism aimed at protecting the KQ monopoly…in so doing they (officials from Kenya) interpreted the Basa agreements to suit their needs," he further added.

Fastjet, which is backed by Easyjet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, was to launch operations in Kenya via buying Fly540 but the deal fell through. The airline's move to establish its own budget airline in Kenya also hit a snag after the regulator refused to issue the operating licence-in what was interpreted by some aviation experts as measures to protect KQ.

It finally succeeded in establishing its base in Tanzania.

But, for two years now, the airline has been trying to operate flights to Kenya from Tanzania, however, according to a report by the Daily Nation a 2011 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) requires that only airlines with substantial local ownership can be licensed to operate scheduled services between the two countries.

What, has however, shocked Tanzanian officials is that Air Uganda, which didn't have local ownership was granted the rights to operate in Kenya.

According to the Daily Nation, Tanzania attempted to circumnavigate the MoU on the basis of ‘principal place of business and effective regulatory control as additional designation criteria for its airlines. On this criterion, Tanzania wanted Kenya to allow Fastjet to operate scheduled services here.

It is said that refusal by the Kenyan ministry of Transport on the basis that the principles of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (Basa) and MoU must be protected from ‘susceptible to misinterpretation and abuse' triggered Tanzania to change lights terms for KQ.

This paper couldn't establish whether the decision by Kenyan authorities to ban Tanzania tourist vehicles from accessing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, also triggered the latest move.

Tanzania tells KQ to cut Dar es Salaam flights

FLYING INTO A STORM: Effective from March 19th, KQ will only be allowed to offer 14 flights a week to Dar es Salaam.

NAIROBI, Kenya - Hundreds of regular air travelers were caught by surprise last week, when national carrier, Kenya Airways (KQ), announced a drastic reduction of scheduled flights to the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam writes JOHN SAMBO.

In a statement, KQ management said, ‘Kenya Airways wishes to notify its customers that it has reduced its frequencies to Dar es Salaam from 42 to 14 per week and will now only fly twice daily from March 19th. This is as a result of a communication from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) reducing flight frequencies of Kenyan carriers into Tanzania.'

Observers were quick to label the move another tit-for-tat because Fastjet Tanzania is going through several bureaucratic hurdles to get approval to begin Nairobi flights.

The KQ statement also reads in part, ‘Noting that Bilateral Air Services Agreements (BASA) are negotiated between governments, we are aware that the relevant Kenyan government agencies have reached out to their Tanzanian counterparts in a bid to resolve the issue."

According to statistics from the Centre for Aviation and OAG, the Dar route comes second behind Mombasa as the most booked flight. Nairobi-Entebbe is third.

Not only will KQ take a considerable financial hit from the flight reductions, but also passengers travellers will have to make adjustments to their travel plans.

Late last year, fastjet plc received permission from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority to operate flights from Uganda to Juba, Nairobi, Kigali and Johannesburg under "5th Freedom" rights using Tanzanian based aircraft.

Fastjet Chief Executive Officer, Ed Winter said last November: "5th Freedom rights present a fantastic opportunity to increase the Tanzanian network, increasing aircraft utilisation and also establishing the fastjet brand in Uganda without the immediate establishment of a full Ugandan base."

FASTJET MAKES STRIDES TOWARDS ATTAINING ZIMBABWE AOC
(Posted 26th March 2015)

Fastjet has earlier today announced that the Zimbabwe Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has granted them an Air Service Permit, similar to what other countries in the region call an Air Service Licence.

This is a crucial first step towards establishing Fastjet (Zimbabwe) and work is already in progress towards meeting the conditionalities for an Air Operator Certificate, in short AOC, which will allow the start of operations from the new base in Harare. Sources close to the airline also confirmed that the Zimbabwean authorities have accepted the business plan Fastjet submitted, the proposed aircraft type to be deployed in Zimbabwe and most important the ownership structure. It is the latter which makes certain that nationality requirements are fully met in order to qualify being designated as a Zimbabwean carrier and obtaining route rights from Zimbabwe into other African countries in the region.

This development goes hand in hand with a similar process underway in neighbouring Zambia where Fastjet is equally at an advanced stage to commence flights just as soon as they have been granted their AOC.

Said Ed Winter, Chairman of Fastjet PLC: 'We recognized the real potential in Zimbabwe some time ago and have been working with the authorities to build fastjet Zimbabwe, and obtain permission to commence operations to various domestic and international destinations from the country. The granting of the ASP demonstrates the ever-increasing reputation that fastjet has built across the region and marks a significant step forward for our business. fastjet has identified many potential routes within and from Zimbabwe where it believes that the low-cost model will stimulate and tap into the huge market of passengers currently travelling by bus. For example there are as many as 100 buses a day travelling the 1,100km between Harare and Johannesburg at fares up to $120 – return'. It is expected that Fastjet's lowest fare levels will match those bus fares if not be lower, as presently the lowest international fares out of Dar es Salaam come in at 50 US Dollars, PLUS TAXES AND FEES, one way.

In a related development are all aviation eyes across the East African Community now on the upcoming discussions between Tanzania and Kenya towards granting Fastjet landing rights from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi. This follows the backlash a week ago when Tanzanian authorities reduced frequencies by Kenyan airlines into Tanzania by a staggering 60 percent. This action was taken as a punitive measure for not granting Fastjet, a designated airline by Tanzanian aviation authorities which meets all the required nationality criteria, landing rights since the first application was launched nearly a year ago.

Fastjet flies from Dar es Salaam to Kilimanjaro, Mwanza and Mbeya on Tanzanian domestic routes while also serving Johannesburg, Lusaka, Harare and Entebbe on regional and African continental routes. Watch this space for breaking and regular aviation news from the Eastern, Central and Southern African region.

The Star said:
Jambojet Numbers Hit Nearly Half a Million
Jambojet flew nearly half a million passengers in its first year of operation, almost 50 per cent of
Fastjet Tanzania's passenger numbers in four years.
Jambojet and Fastjet are both budget airlines. Though Jambojet started operations last year, plans to
launch it were announced in 2012 around the same time Fastjet started preparations for its low cost
carrier business in Africa. In February, Fastjet celebrated hitting the one million mark in Tanzania.
Jambojet has announced that it has so far flown 492,000 passengers since its launch on April 1 last
year and is banking on new routes to grow passenger numbers in the domestic market.
"About thirty five per cent of our passengers were flying for the very first time. This shows strong
market demand for low cost air travel in Kenya," said CEO Willem Hondius in a statement.
Jambojet is a wholly owned subsidiary of national carrier Kenya Airways.

This is the reason fastjets needs Nairobi, its either it gets to operate in Nairobi or it folds

Nyinyi wenyewe waTZ ndio mmekataa bidhaa za Azam ati ni poor quality. Sasa utawa-expect kivipi to make headways into Kenyan market where firms try to upstage each other with better quality goods and services? They havent complained about any mistreatment by the Kenyan authorities. I think Fastjet isnt telling the truth why it is not able to obtain licence in Kenya, there must be a glitch they are trying to cover up.

Azam products zina ubora wa kimataifa na zinauzika popote.

Fastjet launches new regional route
Publish Date: Apr 18, 2015
Kampala Uganda

FASTJET Tanzania Airline has officially launched its newest flight between Kilimanjaro, Tanzania and Entebbe Airport.

It will offer three weekly flights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays.

"Fastjet has responded to requests from Ugandans and Tanzanians asking for a direct route to connect to East Africa major centers of business, offering customers the lowest fares," Jimmy Kibati the general manager said during the press briefing at Entebbe Airport.

"We are thrilled to expand this route network between Kilimanjaro and Entebbe, which are some of the busiest cities in East Africa. Our passengers can now access Entebbe conveniently from Kilimanjaro at very low costs," he said.

Kibati said that the launch of the route indicate the success in implementing strategy in becoming a true budget African airline.

Tickets for Kilimanjaro-Entebbe flights have market stimulating fares as low as UG Sh150,000 for a one way ticket, but exclude luggage and government taxes.

The launch of flights from Kilimanjaro to Entebbe makes it easier for hundreds of officials who travel to Arusha all year round to attend meetings at the East African Community headquarters in Arusha.

Other regional institutions in Arusha include The Nelson Mandela Research University, Eastern and Southern Management Institute (ESAMI), Commonwealth Regional Health Secretariat (CRHS), East African Business Council (EABC), East African Law Society (EALS), East African Employers Organization (EAEO), East African Trade Union Confederation (EATUC), African Court, Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) among many others.

Other travelers who will benefit are those from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi who are expected to fly to Kilimanjaro via Entebbe.
