Claim

A Facebook post written in Hausa claimed that a stray Iranian drone entered Nigerian airspace and was shot down by the Nigerian army in Dan Isah village, Sokoto state. The post included a video showing the wreckage of the drone.

“An Iranian aircraft that lost its way entered Nigeria, and the Nigerian army has successfully shot it down in Dan Isah village in Sokoto state.”


Verdict

Digital verification tools traced the video to its original source published on March 1, 2026, by Rudaw Media Network, a Kurdish media outlet. The footage shows a drone that crashed in Girdechal village, Erbil, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

No evidence in Nigeria, or reports from Nigerian or international media about an Iranian drone in Nigeria. The Nigerian Defence Headquarters did not release any statement about shooting down an Iranian drone.

The claim that the video shows a stray Iranian drone shot down in Nigeria is FALSE. The footage actually shows a drone crash in Erbil, Iraq.​
