TECHNOLOGY
ETCS is the core signalling and train control component of ERTMS, the European Rail Traffic Management System. ETCS continuously calculates a safe maximum speed for each train, with cab signalling for the driver and on-board systems that take control if the permissible speed is exceeded. For ETCS trackside equipment and train borne systems need to be standardized according to the different ETCS levels.

ETCS: Signalling Without frontiers

ETCS Level 1
ETCS Level 1 can be easily superimposed on the existing national signalling system and provides cab signalling. Movement authorities can be granted through fixed and switchable Eurobalises. They also send route data to the on board unit. With the received data the maximum speed as well as the breaking curves are calculated at any time. Additionally to Eurobalises it is possible to implement EuroLoop (loop infill) or a radio based solution (radio infill) which continuously transmits data over a longer distance.

ETCS is installed trackside and train borne. Data is exchanged by spot transmission from track to train via ETCS balises.

ETCS Level 2
ETCS Level 2 is a radio based system which displays signalling and movement authorities in the cab. The train is continuously sending data to the Radio Block Centre (RBC) to report its exact position and direction. Eurobalises are used as passive positioning beacons. Trains refine their position with additional sensors such as accelerometers, odometers or radar.

Extended level 1, with ETCS data transmission continuous by GSM-R. On the trackside a RBC controls all train movements in the covered area.

ETCS Level 3
ETCS Level 3 is a fully radio based system without any trackside equipment. The Radio Block Centre (RBC) receives positioning of each train continuously and calculates smallest possible train distances at any time. Therefore the track is no longer separated in fixed blocks but split into “moving blocks”. At the same time it is vital that trains guarantee their integrity as there is no trackside equipment available to provide this information. ETCS L3 is currently still under standardization.

Trackside equipment disappeared. Train-location and -integrity do not rely on trackside equipment (signals, track circuits or axle counters) but are handled by train and RBC.

Kenya SGR freight was 50k for 20ft container tokea mwanzo, but a promotional tarrif was put in place at 35k per container to attract the service to customers, now the promotional tarrif ended and it's back to 50k... But instead of the jounerlist saying exactly that, he is insinuating that the freight cost have been increased to pay for loans...(instead of a
saying freight cost have been returned to standard charges) . And people like David ndii are all but eager to quote such unprofessional reporting just because it agrees with their narratives

Will the customers stay with KR upon this elapse of Promotion? I know Uganda truck Association have long rejected SGR n threatened to use central corridor if forced to that costly transport mode!

what truckers charge which is between 80k-100k depending on weight of the cargo...

But businesses see an advantage for truck because trucks brings the container to your doorstep with their charges so no additional hustle.

Hyperthethical example is:
You make arrangements to pay 50k to SGR for the container gets dropped at Nairobi ICD. Then again you make other separate arangements with a truck company for 20k to deliver the container to your whearhouse anywhere withing Nairobi metro region. Rem, if you don't have the truck pick up the cargo from the ICD within time, you invite additional charges..

As compared to paying a truck company 80k-100k for them to drive from Mombasa to your door step at no extra cost...

If you are a rational person, you will realise that Your own Tz SGR will face a similar challenge .... Not unless you want to tell us your SGR will have multiple feeder rails that connect to every factory andajor businesses to deliver cargo straight to their doorstep

But ours electrical SGR operated via power generated by gas n hydropower procured dilligently will have a bigger room to adjust the price as the market demands. In other words our SGR future is sustainably secured.

Kenyan standard-gauge railway to start trial operation in March

CONSTRUCTION of the $US 3.8bn 472km Mombasa – Nairobi standard-gauge railway (SGR) is due to be completed in March by China Railway and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), which has a 10-year concession to operate the line, to allow test running to begin in preparation for the start of train operation in June.

“The first class of 105 trainees completed their classroom training in November 2016 and are currently on hands-on training in the field,” says Mr Atanas Maina managing director of Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC), which is overseeing the project.

The tests will be used to validate the new automatic block signalling system, which is the first installation of its kind in Kenya. The signalling operates on a fibre optic and microwave backbone supported by an independent electricity supply. In addition to lineside signals, the locomotives also have cab displays to show the status of signals.

CRRC is providing the fleet of 56 diesel locomotives, 1620 freight wagons and 40 coaches. So far 12 locomotives and 35 passenger coaches have been received with delivery scheduled to be completed by May. The first freight wagons have also arrived in Kenya.

Passenger trains will be able to accommodate 960 passengers and will have a top speed of 120km/h, while freight trains of up to 4000 tonnes or 216 TEUs will operate at a maximum of 80km/h. The maximum axleload on the new line is 25 tonnes.

Considerable attention is being paid to security. “The National Police Service has a division charged with the responsibility of securing Kenya’s railway installations,” Maina says. “Already this police division is in discussions with KRC and the CRBC to provide security to all sensitive SGR installations including long bridges, passenger and ordinary crossing stations and installations, railway fences and freight terminals.”

Security officers will be backed by 24-hour CCTV surveillance monitored from the Nairobi Control Office and it is envisaged that there will be police stations at each of the 33 stations along the line so that officers can be quickly deployed to respond to emergencies.
