Cost comparison SGR Kenya vs SGR Tanzania

Haya!!!! I used to be a teacher for sure, right in Kajiado and Namanga some time back when i was still young. That is why i know much of Tanzania. Namanga is a stone throw from Arusha remember!!! Am no longer a teacher. That is what we do in Kenya! Employment is not ours, get the capital and quit! Start your own projects and employ others!

But why are you guys changing the discussion from SGR to discussing Edward Wanjala??

U have mind problems ..since completion of Kinyerezi 1 150MW ..haijawai kutokea power blackouts (mgao. Wa umeme) ...na Tz ryt now electricity produced is above electricity consumed..we are in rural electrification project ..phase 2 ..

FYI .. kinyerezi 2 240MW is U/c now and alrdy plants 6/12 plants ..have been received from abroad..

Extension Of Kinyerezi 1 is to begin soon ..contractor yuko site ..extension of Kinyerezi 1 to 335MW ..nikukumbushe kuwa bado Kinyerezi 3 and 4 ..the whole Kinyerezi plants ..ita produce about 1800 MW

Coal at Mchuchuma 600MW ..contractor ..has already signed..na itaenda sambamba na mining iron at Liganga

If you want to know about other power projects ..i l tell them to you..
Waache waendelee na theory yao ya umbumbumbu ati unreliable power is why the Jubilee govt had to resort to outdated used diesel engines instead of modern brand new electrical engines. This is a country bordering Ethiopia with unit cost of US $ 6 Cents a country that Tanzania has just signed power agreement to tap 300 MW of that cheapest energy on Earth.

Johannesburg - Kibo Mining PLC said on Wednesday that a series of meetings held with the key Tanzanian stakeholders in the Mbeya Coal to Power Project (MCPP) had resulted in significant progress for the further development of the project.

Kibo is developing a 250-350MW mouth-of-mine thermal power station in its power and coal mine elements in south-western Tanzania. The Tanzania-focused mineral exploration and development company said a recent request for an expedited development of the MCPP was followed by active interaction between all stakeholders which culminated in a series of progress meetings held this week.

Among key developments was an agreement on a clear agenda and associated schedule with relevant government stakeholders to work on specific development aspects of the MCPP that are dependent on negotiating with government.

Kibo said the environmental and social impact assessment submissions and the special mining licence application for the Mbeya coal mine and Mbeya Power station had also been duly processed for certification and were now awaiting final approval. There was also engagement with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals on the latest developments in relation to possible further changes in mining policies and the Mining Act.

Kibo said the engagement reconfirmed that its operations were not affected by the current debate on mining policies and the Mining Act. Kibo chief executive, Louis Coetzee, said they had seen strong and committed engagement from all the Tanzanian stakeholders towards moving the MCPP development process forward over the past two weeks. "From these meetings we have also developed a far better appreciation of the reasons for the perceived slow processing of the special mining licence application and environmental certification," Coetzee said.

"It is evident that the relevant departments concerned with the processing of these applications have taken a very diligent and pro-active approach given the integrated nature of the MCPP."

Government fast tracking Mchuchuma and Liganga’s mining projects

The much-awaited mining of iron ore and coal at Liganga and Mchuchuma respectively is expected to start next month as the government is currently settling issues with investors regarding investment incentives and power tariffs.

The current negotiations on the two issues have pushed back the planned date for commencement of the mining activities as the government initially set March as the time for beginning of operations at the mines.

During the last Parliamentary session, the government also insisted that it was fast tracking the required procedures to enable the projects to kick off, at a cost of US$3 billion.

The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investments, Dr Adelhelm Meru, told the ‘Daily News’ that the procedures were now at an advanced stage since investors have released funds to compensate people who will be relocated to pave the way for the projects.

“We are now finalising preparations on discussing the issue of tariffs for power to be produced as well as incentives such as tax reliefs and others for the investors to operate profitably,” said Meru during an interview. “These matters need time to reach an agreement, but probably we will finish the talks this month so that the mining could start next month,” he added.

Regarding compensation, Meru explained that the people to be evicted will soon get their compensation as the funds are already there, however, he declined to mention the amount investors had availed for this purpose, arguing that the information was not yet for public consumption.

The evaluation on people’s properties for compensation has been completed and the report has been endorsed by the government. The two projects are jointly implemented by the National Development Corporation (NDC) and Chinese company, Sichuan Hongda Group (SHG) Limited, popularly known as Tanzania China International Mineral Resources Limited. The Chinese company has already finished doing feasibility study for the projects.

The study found that there are reserves of 428 million tonnes of coal at Mchuchuma and 126 million tonnes of iron at Liganga. It has been established that the Liganga coal mine has the capacity to produce about three million tones of iron per year that is enough to generate 600MW of electricity.

So far, the company has already secured a licence from the Ministry for coal mining as well as environmental permits for the project to use water from Katewaka, Mchuchuma and Lupali rivers. When the project starts operating, it will employ about 33 000 people and the government will save money used to import coal.

Kinyerezi II to be completed by December - project leader

BY December this year, the ambitious Kinyerezi II power project will be providing about 30 to 240 megawatts of electricity to the national grid in attempts to further expand the country’s power generation capacity.

The revelation was made over the weekend in Dar es Salaam by the project manager Steven Manda, when he addressed the press on the progress of the project.

He said every month, the Kinyerezi Phase II power plant would have capacity to generate at least 30 megawatts, and at least 240MW upon completion, all adding capacity to the national grid.

He said since its inauguration by President John Magufuli in March last year and laying of a foundation stone on the same date, its progress has risen to about 63 per cent, expressing confidence that it was at a better stage.

The project worth about 344 million USD (approximately 722bn/-), is currently being built at the Kinyerezi area in Dar es Salaam.

During the laying of the foundation stone, President Magufuli directed the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) to do away with hiring electricity generating plants and instead, come up with constructive ideas on how to set up their own power plant.
