President Yoweri Museveni has announced the postponement of Uganda’s Martyrs’ Day due to an Ebola outbreak in Eastern Congo, which supplies thousands of annual pilgrims to the event.

In a statement shared on social media, President Museveni explained that the decision followed consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders.

Uganda typically hosts thousands of pilgrims from the affected regions for the annual event at the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, which commemorates the 45 Christian converts executed in the 1880s. Protecting lives takes precedence over tradition in this case

Museveni urges pilgrims already traveling to return home, observe precautions, report sick individuals, and seek medical care promptly to prevent potential spread into Uganda.
