Two Christians lost their lives and several others were injured in a road accident in Lwengo District while travelling to attend Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations. The victims were part of a group of pilgrims heading to Namugongo when the accident occurred along the Masaka–Mbarara highway on Monday night.
According to local authorities, the crash involved a vehicle carrying pilgrims. Two people died on the spot while a number of survivors sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene and launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The tragedy cast a shadow over this year's Martyrs Day commemorations, which attracted thousands of believers from across Uganda and neighbouring countries. Religious and local leaders expressed condolences to the bereaved families and urged travellers to observe road safety measures, especially during major religious events that involve long-distance travel.
Uganda Martyrs Day, observed annually on June 3, honours the 45 Christian martyrs who were killed between 1885 and 1887 for refusing to renounce their faith. The commemoration draws large numbers of pilgrims to the shrines at Namugongo and other martyrdom sites across the country.
