BBC: we had a ‘duty' to make Rwandan genocide documentary

Corporation responds to resolution calling for its licence to be revoked and film-makers to be charged with genocide denial

The BBC has defended its decision to broadcast a documentary about the Rwandan genocide that has sparked complaints from the country's government, saying it had "a duty" to make the film.

Rwanda's Untold Story, which was broadcast on BBC2 on 1 October, investigated allegations that current president Paul Kagame was involved in shooting down a plane carrying one of his predecessors – an event which sparked the 1994 conflict that cost thousands of lives.

Kagame responded by telling the Rwandan parliament that the BBC had chosen to "tarnish Rwandans, dehumanise them" and accused it of "genocide denial".

On Wednesday Rwandan MPs approved a resolution calling on the government to charge the documentary-makers with genocide denial and revoke the BBC's licence to broadcast in the country.

A BBC spokeswoman responded on Friday: "The Rwandan genocide raises extremely painful issues but the BBC has a duty to investigate difficult and challenging subjects.

"We believe this programme, which was produced by a BBC current affairs team in London and broadcast in the UK, made a valuable contribution to the understanding of the tragic history of the country and the region."

She said the BBC regretted calls for sanctions against it and criticised the "threat of direct measures against an independent broadcaster" which she described as "inappropriate".

The country's minister of foreign affairs Louise Mushikiwabo described the documentary as an "attack on Rwanda and its people" and said her government was contemplating taking action against the BBC.

She said: "My government reserves the right to respond, on its own timing, in a manner commensurate with the weight of the offence."

An estimated 800,000 Rwandan people, mostly minority Tutsis, were killed in just 100 days in 1994. The BBC programme included interviews with American-based researchers who say most of those killed may have been Hutus killed by members of Kagame's Rwandan Patriotic Front.

It also contained interviews with former aides of Kagame, accusing him of being behind the April 1994 shooting down of a presidential plane that sparked the genocide.

What The Guardian has revealed is common knowledge in East Africa.
Murder was carried out by all tribal groupings with the Tutsis on the receiving end.
Kagame was however instrumental in sparking off the genocide by shooting down the plane carring the incumbent president.
That is the sacred truth, and that truth will not go away.

Kagame and other perpetrators of the genocide in both Rwanda and Congo must be held accountable for their offence. Whether it is tomorrow or 50 years later, Justice must be done.

I can see now the blood of those who killed starting complaining of the unfair game kagame did.
It is a duty now Tanzania to keep peace in Rwanda. By hook or crook......

Wapi wazee wa genosaidiiiiii..... Wapi mzee wa sumu sumuuuuuuuuuuu

Kishimbe wa Kishimbe

Poor Kagame; you will never wish away the allegation about your role in the genocide; even if you were to kill all your opponents. You cant fight the entire worls; one of these days you will be held accountable; the likes of your stooges like Mushikiwabo will simply dissolve into thin air!

The British should also be held accountable for helping topple the Hitler Government and annihillating the Nazi party which at that was sore representative of the German people.

Could someone tell me the difference between habyaliman and hitler. Between intelahamwe and the nazi party. Beacause in my opinion and those of peace loving people, they are all genociders. They deserved to die.

France rejects appeal by Habyarimana's widow YouTube

The Paris Court of Appeal has rejected an attempt by the widow of the late former Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana to disallow the results of a ballistics report in connection with her husband's death.
[/h] Agathe Kanziga Habyarimana had challenged the experts' report which supported the findings that the missiles that brought down the former president's plane on 6 April 1994 were fired from Kanombe Military Barracks.
The court in Paris on Tuesday rejected an appeal by Agathe Kanziga Habyarimana and confirmed the lower court ruling that the missiles were launched from the barracks.
French judges Marc Trévidic and Nathalie Poux had identified Kanombe Barracks as the launch site of the missile that brought down the plane as it prepared to land at Kigali International Airport.
Trevidic based his findings on the ballistics report to rule that Habyarimana was killed by his inner circle.
Seven senior Rwandan officials were among those accused of involvement in the plot which saw the start of the Genocide against the Tutsi that claimed over a million lives.
