US President Donald Trump is expected to send a congressional and business delegation to Zimbabwe for talks with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in what could signal a significant shift in relations between Harare and Washington.

The development follows a meeting between Mnangagwa and US Republican Congressman Marlin Stutzman of Indiana on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month.

According to ZANU-PF spokesperson Ambassador Chris Mutsvangwa, Stutzman met Mnangagwa for more than an hour and later briefed Trump about the discussions. Mutsvangwa said this prompted the idea of an “impromptu congress-cum-business delegation” to Zimbabwe.

The proposed delegation is expected to focus on trade, investment and Zimbabwe’s critical mineral resources, including lithium, platinum-group metals, chrome and nickel.

Zimbabwe is seeking to attract more US and Western investment into mining and local mineral processing under its “Zimbabwe is Open for Business” policy.

The possible visit comes as the two countries work to improve relations after years of tension over sanctions, governance and other political issues.

The US has also recently granted Zimbabwe an allocation of 813 tonnes of raw sugar exports under its 2027 tariff-rate quota system, allowing duty-free access to the US market.

Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Ambassador Albert Chimbindi has also confirmed discussions between Zimbabwean and US officials, saying both sides had agreed on the need for high-level visits.

However, there is no confirmed date yet for the delegation’s visit, and details of who will travel to Zimbabwe have not been officially announced.

The development is being closely watched because stronger US-Zimbabwe ties could bring new investment, markets and partnerships, particularly in the critical minerals sector.
