More fake degrees?



There was an article in Monitor yesterday entitled "Monnakgosi becomes a Professor Of Divinity". This reported that:

"During a special ceremony at the church that he founded in the early 1990s, Omega Global University on Saturday conferred upon Dr David Monnakgosi a Professor of Divinity Degree for his lifelong service to God and the nation."

However there's a catch. Omega Global University doesn't actually exist. It's a fake university. As far as I can establish it operates from no more than a cellphone number. It used to have various web sites (including omegabibletheologicalcollege.com and omegaglobaluniversity.com) but those sites have both recently been suspended.

Both of the suspended sites were registered to:

co 29 Maud Ave

South Africa"

This seems to be the guy who answers the cellphone number and who described himself as "Professor Sibiya". No surprise, when you do some research you quickly find that there is no such person as "Professor Sibiya".

Mayor Mdaka´s honorary "doctorate" under scrutiny

The mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Falaza Mdaka, was recently awarded an honorary doctor's degree by the Omega Global University, but many people have asked the question whether it is worth the paper it's written on.

The Witbank-based "university" awarded the honorary degree to Cllr Mdaka for "his perpetual effort to make the lives of other people better." The ceremony took place a fortnight ago and other people who have been honoured in this way include well-known choral master Shalati Joseph Khosa of Phalaborwa, Tinyiko Elphas Khosa, who started New Era College years ago, and Gabriel Ngomane, a businessman from Mpumalanga.

The term "honorary doctorate" normally refers to a very prestigious title conferred upon an outstanding individual by an institute of higher education. In South Africa, this is normally awarded by one of the registered universities. In the University of Johannesburg's Charter for Honorary Degrees, an honorary doctoral degree is described as:

"&#8230; an academic award that entitles the honoured person to bear the doctoral title honoris causa in recognition of his/her outstanding academic contributions that do not however meet the requirements set in the University Rules or the Act for the conferment of a doctoral degree as a result of the successful completion of a recognized programme of study of the University."

In certain cases, doctoral titles are also conferred upon people based on their contributions to the community. Again in the case of the University of Johannesburg, it is stated that such an award "&#8230; is based on relevant outstanding intellectual contributions and/or relevant outstanding contributions to public life."

The universities in South Africa are also very conservative in as far as the awarding of such degrees is concerned. Recipients of such degrees include former president Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The charter also stresses this fact by stating: "A conservative awards policy is followed, in order to emphasize the extraordinary and inherent value of the awards."

The Omega Global University is not listed as a registered South African University. On their website, this institution invites people to apply for an honorary doctor's degree. It states that "Omega Global University offers honorary Doctorate degrees to deserving candidates based on their life experience." To qualify for such a degree, you also only need "at least 5 years of work or life experience relevant to (the) desired major." Interested parties can also apply online for such a degree.

I don't know this university - Minister

LOBAMBA- The Minister of Education has claimed ignorance of the university that conferred honourary doctorates to some prominent figures in the political and business landscape over the weekend. The institution in question is known as Omega Global University.

Minister Wilson Ntshangase said he had never, in the least, been in contact with the university. He had been asked by Senator Themba Msibi on what an individual had to do in order to receive the honourary certificates. Msibi was quick to point that he was not against this but wanted clarity from the minister.

"Questions have been raised about the university. Could the minister explain if the university is recognised in Swaziland? Couldn't our own university do the same?" asked Msibi.

Ntshangase responded by saying that he also had questions about the university. "I do not know this university. It was the first time I have heard of it," he said. He added "procedurally they should have informed me of their plans. I cannot therefore jump into matters I do not know lest it is said I am interfering," added the minister.

Senator Moi-Moi Masilela called the minister to order and suggested that he investigate the matter further. "The minister should have said he will look into the matter and bring back a full report later," said Masilela. Senate President Chief Gelane Zwane said the issue was of national interest. "We need to verify their status and find out if they are genuine," said Zwane. Some of the people who received the honours included Senator Robert Zwane and busines-swoman Sylvia Mthethwa.

...you do not need to go to class-university

MBABANE - According to their website Omega Global University offers honourary doctorate degrees to candidates based on their life experience. It states that if you qualify after going through the eligibility requirements, you can apply through their office contacts Eligibility Requirements for the Doctorate Degree Programme.

It states the university degree programmes allow professionals and working adults to get Doctorate degrees on the basis of life experience or by submitting a doctoral thesis. It states that you can receive this accredited degree without attending classes or taking admissions anywhere.

"Candidates seeking admission in our Doctorate degree programme are required to have at least 5 years of work or life experience relevant to their desired major. For those candidates who do not have enough experience, Omega Global University provides the flexibility to submit a doctoral thesis relevant to the major they are interested in," reads the admission requirements.

There is nothing as a free doctoral degree people! If you want a doctorate - let alone a degree just go to school to earn a credible 1st-degree, 2nd-degree, and then you doctorate, period. Throwing around doctoral degrees like manna beats everyone's imagination....!

Ukweli ni kuwa kuna digrii za udaktari ambazo zinatolewa kwa heshima kwenye vyuo vikuu mbalimbali hapa duniani. Lakini kawaida huombi kupewa. Chuo kinakufikiria. Hicho chuo cha Omega unpeleka "maombi ya kupewa" siyo "kusomea" hiyo digrii.

Haya yanyotendeka Tanzania ni mwendelezo wa jinsi nchi yetu invyochukulia kiwepesi swala la elimu. Hii inajionyesha dhahili hata kwenye majadiliano yanayotokea kwenye JF. Wengine wamefikia hata kukata tamaa kuwa hamna sababu tena ya kusoma.
