Mikel Arteta wanted to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The club's board would prefer to hire someone else after Pep leaves.
This is the reason why Arteta has taken the Arsenal job.
Pep could leave Man City this summer.
According to the Mirror, Mikel Arteta could choose another path instead of becoming the new Arsenal manager.
The report claims that the Spaniard was interested in becoming Pep Guardiola's successor at Manchester City. But when he approached the club's board to get reassurance that he was the next in line, Arteta was turned down.
Man City bosses couldn't make any promises about his future even though they believe that Mikel is one of the most talented young coaches. It would be highly unlikely for them to choose Arteta when Pep Guardiola is ready to move on

Calum Chambers amebadilika sana kiuchezaji na jana alidhihirisha hilo kwa kushirikiana vilivyo na David Luiz.

Haikushangaza Chambers kutoka akiwa MOTM.

Arsenal are considering a January move for Bayer Leverkusen forward Kevin Volland, Sky Sports News understands.

The 27-year-old is said to have been watched by Gunners scouts in a handful of recent matches and is expected to be among the names put to new head coach Mikel Arteta.

Volland is predominantly a centre-forward but can also play off the right-hand side, and is more desirable because he is left footed.

Here's five things we observed.

1. Hands on, just like Pep

Anyone who has ever seen Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Amazon will know that the Spaniard is nothing but intense.

'Intelligence, passion and knowledge' - Managers react to Arteta appointment

From shouting at his players, to grabbing them, to dragging them into positions, to jumping around the place, Guardiola is animated to say the least

Arteta spent three years learning his trade under the two-time Champions League winner at the Etihad, and it seems Guardiola's style may have rubbed off on him.

It's not clear what the Spaniard was instructing his Arsenal players, but he was certainly hands on with them as he dealt out instructions.

2. Ozil put through his paces

Arteta made a point of reiterating the importance of Mesut Ozil to Arsenal when speaking to the press for the first time on Friday.

"Of course he's a massive player," explained the Spaniard. "I work with him and I know when he clicks, what he can bring to the team. It's my job to get the best out of him, of course."

Ozil missed the Everton game through injury, although interim boss Freddie Ljungberg claimed he wouldn't have played him anyway after his conduct against Manchester City.

But Ozil could be back sooner than expected now that Arteta is at the wheel. And it's safe to say the German will be made to work hard.

3. Coaches are involved

Guardiola ensured Arteta was always involved in Manchester City's training sessions.

It's this experience, working so closely and in a hands-on manner with Guardiola, that earned Arteta a shot at the Arsenal job.

How Arsenal could line up under Mikel Arteta with Pep Guardiola's influence

The Spaniard clearly agrees with his mentor that this is a good approach to have, and made sure his coaches at Arsenal were front and centre on Sunday.

Among them, head of performance Shad Forsythe was photographed giving France international striker Alexandre Lacazette some instructions.

4. Some motivational words

Guardiola's Amazon documentary All Or Nothing showed the Spaniard is a fan of gathering the players in a big group and addressing them as one.

This isn't a new phenomenon in football management, but Arteta was snapped in more than one shot talking to players in a group, seemingly getting his philosophy across to them.

Arteta explained that he has a plan to turn things around in his Friday press conference.

He warned that any player unwilling to buy into his project to get the Gunners firing isn't fit to wear the famous red and white shirt.

5. Youngsters aren't going anywhere

One of the talking points from arguably the flattest game of the Premier League season to date on Saturday was Ljungberg's team selection.

Out were the likes of Lacazette and Matteo Guendouzi as Emile Smith-Rowe and co. came in - with the young Englishman making his first top-flight start.

Ljungberg insisted he selected the team, but there is the sense that Arteta had an influence on the line-up in a bid to get a better look at the entire Arsenal squad.

It should therefore come as no surprise that the Gunners youngsters were visible in a number of pictures from Sunday's training session at London Colney.

Available for as little as £8.5million when the transfer window reopens next month.

And it is understood that Arteta, who was announced as Unai Emery's replacement on Friday, has identified the Belgian as one of his top targets.

However the recently-appointed Gunners boss faces competition from German duo Bayern and Dortmund, who are also keen on signing the striker who has 118 goals and 71 assists in 303 matches for Napoli.

Arteta: "Unfortunately, yes [the club's identity has slipped]. Thats my feeling & it's what I have to recover. We have to make little adjustments & the time for training is not a lot, so we have to be sure the players understand the idea that I want to bring to them" #Arsenal

Arteta: "The direction's going to be very clear & it's not going to be negotiable. I will need the players to be on board with the right attitude, with the right passion & commitment. Step by step, we will be improving and reaching to find the right identity for us" #Arsenal

Arteta: "We have to have passion, we have to be dominant, we have to be aggressive. We have to play in the opponent's territory as much as we want. I want the ball, I want to attack them as much as possible, I want to prevent them from attacking as much as possible" #Arsenal
