The raging spat involving officials of the
Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and the
football federation that has been on for the
past few weeks, could be directly linked to the
imminent entry of other Pay-Tv channels in
the market, Nairobi News understands.
For a while, the tussle between these two
bodies centred on decision making- as
witnessed during the botched league
encounters involving AFC Leopards versus
Sony Sugar and Tusker versus Muhoroni
Youth during the 2014 league season.
Then the war escalated a notch higher
following a disagreement on whether the 2015
season’s top flight league should constitute 16
or 18 clubs, with KPL advocating for a status
quo while the local federation proposing an
expansion of the competition.
However, well established sources within
Kenyan football circles have now revealed
that there is more than meets the eye.
BROADCAST RIGHTS
According to intermediaries, two Pay Tv
channels (Tanzanian based) Azam TV and
Arab owned beIN SPORTS have finalized
plans to penetrate the Kenyan market.
It is believed either, or both institutions, have
primarily targeted the Kenyan Premier
League for investment, a market currently
monopolized by South African based giant
SuperSport who have bought the competition’s
exclusive broadcast rights for an annual fee of
about Sh 200 million.
Azam Tv and/or beIN SPORTS are understood
to have approached the Kenyan football
administrators in the past couple of weeks
and commenced negotiations while promising
to table an offer that is believed to be slightly
higher than the that currently offered by
SuperSport. SPORTING BRANDS
“Representatives from both sides have met
twice in the past month, in Nairobi and Cairo,
and the powers that be in Kenyan football are
said to be very excited by this offer. Expect
this confusion to escalate within the next few
weeks until either SuperSport agrees to work
with the federation or be pushed out of the
picture altogether,” our source said.
This “offer” is understood to be what behind
the current furore, with the federation,
according to a statement released on
Tuesday, said to be keen on taking over
the day to day running and management of
the league starting next season.
The Kenyan Premier League is believed to be
one of the biggest sporting brands in East and
Central Africa, thanks to professionalism
exhibited by the management and the
consistent coverage across the continent.
This is what is believed to have lured players
from the wider East African region and others
from as far as Cameroon and Nigeria into the
league.

Just curious, are you one of the people someone talked to at Metropolitan Sacco, Kimathi House after you had tried in vain to install "French channels" for the SACCO?

Kenya back on track for digital TV migration.

Rebecca Hawkes
| 05 December 2014
The Kenyan Government and industry stakeholders have agreed a phased schedule for the switch off of analogue television transmission beginning 31 December 2014, following the Supreme Court ruling at the end of September 2014.

A second attempt switch off analogue broadcasting in Nairobi and its environs will take place on New Year's Eve, while phase two will see the end of analogue TV in Mombasa, Malindi, Nyeri, Meru, Kisumu, Webuye, Kakamega, Kisii, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyahururu (Nyadundo), Machakos, Narok and Loldiani (Rongai) on 2 February 2015.

The final phase, on 30 March 2015, will cover Garissa, Kitui, Lodwar, Lokichogio, Kapenguria, Kabarnet, Migori, Voi (Vuria), Mbwinzau/Kibwezi, Namanga and all other remaining sites.

"The phased approach will help in improving the subsequent phases based on lessons learnt. It will also give adequate time for consumer awareness and importation and local distribution of set-top boxes to beef up the current stock across the country. We further believe that setting the timelines will catalyse consumer uptake of set-top boxes and equally motivate vendors to increase their stock levels," said Francis W Wangusi, director general, Communications Authority of Kenya.

Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'I said although it has been a "long and contracted process" there was no choice but to embrace digital terrestrial television (DTT), given the June 2015 global deadline for digital migration, set by the ITU.

"This process brings the single biggest change to television broadcasting in Kenya; digital TV will deliver more choices for viewers and pave the way for exciting new services thus securing Kenya's place as a regional player and leader in creative industries," said Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'I in a statement.

"I wish to urge all Kenyans to embrace the new digital era by purchasing set-top boxes," he added.

StarTimes Media has announced a massive drop in the cost
of acquiring its approved DVB T2 set top boxes in a move
aimed at facilitating a smooth and affordable transition from
analogue to digital broadcasting.
The set top boxes will now retail at just Kshs 199 upon
subscribing to any bouquet at a cost of Kshs 1,500
giving access to over 76 local and international
channels.
To complement the digital migration offering, StarTimes
has introduced the most affordable bouquet in the
country to be known as Nyota that will be retailing at
just Ksh. 149 per month giving Kenyans access to 8
international channels including Star Swahili, E-Star, Star
Music, Star Kungfu, Child Smile, God TV, Iqraa TV, CCTV
News and a host of local content.
Upon acquiring a StarTimes set top box for Kshs 199 and
the 1,500 subscription fee, Kenyans will have a choice to
either enjoy 1 month Unique bouquet (over 76 channels),
45 days Classic bouquet (over 55 channels), 3 months
Basic bouquet (over 37 channels) or 10 months Nyota
bouquet for the same amount.
Acknowledging these latest developments, Mark Lisboa,
VP for Marketing, StarTimes observed that the move is
advised by the company’s vision to ensure every
household has access and enjoys digital television
noting that the company has rolled out extensive after
sales services to ensure the best customer experience
with the StarTimes set top box.
“In the coming days, Kenyans will have to acquire type
approved digital set top boxes, most of those who will
be affected by the switch off from December 31st are first
time buyers, we have therefore considered making it very
affordable for Kenyans to acquire and access our digital
television service while establishing a 24 hour call
centre and a free door to door after sales service to
further bolster our offering,” noted Lisboa.
The company has also made a 20 per cent drop for the
Dual Feature Free To Air Digital Box that will now be
retailing at Kshs 4,000 with access to one month free
viewing of the Unique bouquet worth Kshs 1,500. The
Free to Air set top box is upgradable to the company’s
pay television platform at a subscriber’s will, while
giving free access to local channels upon expiry of the
monthly subscription for good.
To guarantee the best signal reception, the company has
similarly made a 28 per cent subsidy for the external
antenna and cable. The outdoor antenna and a ten meter
cable will now retail at Kshs 1,000 down from Kshs
1,400.
“We are committed to a smooth transition from analogue
to digital broadcasting while enabling Kenyans to
overcome entry barriers through affordability as we
equally showcase our premium channel offering and
customer centered after sales services that will swiftly
manage any challenges faced by our customers,” added
Lisboa.
StarTimes digital set top boxes will have a 1 year
warranty with the offers applicable at all StarTimes
outlets, supermarkets and the over 210 dealer outlets
across Kenya.
