The Chinese charismatic leader Deng Xioping when he came to power after a fierce power struggle in the Chinese communist party correctly identified major problems within that party, Three of those problems were
1. Personality Cult
2. Consolidation of power in one person
3. The problem of handover
The personality cult was a result of Mao Ze dong godlike stature in China even inside the Communist party itself.
While Mao had led China after the 1949 revolution for a period of 5 years of which he was a main man in charge of the policies in the country, plunged a country in a devastating hunger due to his faulty "Great leap forward" policy, a policy that resulted in the great famine that killed tens of millions of the Chinese people. The result of the failing policy resulted in Mao Ze dong resigning from the leadership of the country.
After this painful episode came a cultural revolution where Mao after seing his power eroded, tried to make a comeback by unleashing a so called cutural revolution telling the chinese that that is a way to get rid of the old useless culture and ideas and to embrace modernity, many cultural sites were destroyed, people were made to snitch on one another, even a son to snitch his own father and vice vesa. Educated people were captured, sent to countryside to offer labor and Mao's comrades who didn't go along with him were purged.
After the death of Mao, power struggle ensued in the Communist party, Mao's loyalists wanted to keep power but a group of pragmatic enlightened people in the faction of Deng Xiaoping saw it clearly that, The country can no. long go with the failed policies of Mao, It will be a disaster, So eventually this new faction won the power and cultivsted and supervised reforms that brought so much success to China.
These reforms continued when Jiang Zemin came to power after Deng, He respected the issue of not allowing a personality cult nor letting one person consolidate so much power by himself.
And also when Hu Jintao came to power he followed footsteps, he did the same.
These leaders worked to uplift people's lives and were not so much interested in antagonising the west. Inshort they were building strength of their country while smartly hiding their claws.
During Hu Jintao times, The Chinese knew clearly and very early about the succession plan, they knew that after Hu the next person is Xi Jinping.
Problems started when Xi came to power. He rolled back major political reforms which Deng Xiaoping had initiated.Refused to name a successor, and removed serving terms from the constitution, so now he is a Leader for life!!!.
With the pretext of fighting corruption he purged and continue to purge anyone who doesn't bow to him.
Surprisingly, Xi Jinping who himself was a victim of cultural revolution after his father was purged by Mao, causing him to be exiled in the countryside, You may think that he would embrace Deng's reforms, but he has turn absolutely a Maoist.
When this Corona virus continue to ravage the world and creat so much pain both economically and socially, The chinese people will come to realise that, part of the problem is Xi Jinping's ways of leadership. His leadership is all about control, control and control.
As we speak, millions of the Uighur people are in the concentration camps in China, massive human rights abuses are taking place there. People are forcefully being stripped of their cultural identity and denied religious freedoms as a forced obedience to the party and Xi Jinping's China.
The current Corona virus is another problem, His quest for internal stability and economy, two things which Xi Jinping sees as a pillar for him continuing to rule decided to conceal the true nature of the virus, His government took deliberate measure to hide that the Virus is man to man transmitted obviously for social and economic concerns, As a result of this a critical window to contain the virus was lost. When China came to admitt that there is a man to man transmission of a virus it was too late as millions had already left Wuhan and go all over the world. So how can Xi Jinping evade blames from this pandemic?
While China was using its muscle to influence nations not to close their borders against it even calling those which did so as overreacting, playong racism card, However It was doing the opposite domestically not allowing people with the ID of Hubei from going to other cities. while stopping domestic flights, It was allowing international flights to continue, How can Xi Jinping not be blamed for the International pandemic?.
After Xi Jinping's government claimed success in Hubei he immediately closed International flights to China, Annuled all resident permits and visaz for people who were outside China at that moment, but remember!. His government called governments that did that way to China when it was fighting the hard battle in wuhan overreactive for doing a fraction of what China came to do immediately after thinking they have things in control in Hubei. Isn't this selfish?
But the most devastating of all, Xi Jinping's government in its quest to gain support internally played and amplified nationalism card, rallying people on its side, Unfortunately going even so far as deploying RACISM to rally Chinese people to its side. Whole decades of the China hardwork on the external diplomacy was shattered by Mr Xi Jinping's regime. Africa was a central card in China's International relations, It is the Africa block and Europe that saw China of the Communist party allowed to Join the UN as a legitimate representative of the Chinese people in the UN in 1971. Africa has been a source of raw resources to China and a market for its products, But all these were wiped in just two weeks where the world witnessed a very shocking form of racism from the Chinese under Xi Jinping's watch.
So what is the way forward for China?
Well I just don't see a more growing China under the leadership of Xi Jinping. He has destroyed all secrets that made China to grow very fast. He has given himself so much power and cultivate a personality cult around him.
It is upto to the Chinese people to choose going back to the failed administrarive policies of Mao (Just like Xi Jinping is trying to do) or continue with the wise path of Deng Xioping "with new characteristics"
The choice is in the hands of the chinese people!
