Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has appointed William Sawe as the new commander of the Presidential Escort Unit following a security breach involving President William Ruto during an event in Ganze, Kilifi County. The reshuffle was announced hours after a man managed to breach the president’s security detail while the president was addressing the public.
Sawe, who previously served as the commanding officer of the elite Recce Sub Unit, takes over from Noah Kirwa Maiyo, who has now been redeployed to Vigilance House at the Kenya Police Headquarters. The changes were made with immediate effect as authorities seek to strengthen presidential security and seal any weaknesses exposed during the incident.
The reshuffle also saw George Kirera appointed deputy commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit, while Josphat Sirma was promoted to head the Recce Sub Unit. Inspector General Douglas Kanja described the incident as a serious security lapse and ordered investigations into how the breach occurred.
