Josina Machel
Josina Muthemba, who later adopted the surname Machel, after her marriage to Samora Machel.
From her teenage years up until her early 20's, she had been incarcerated multiple times and persecuted because of her involvement with FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique; Mozambique's Liberation Front). In 1964, she joined the party's Women's Branch, and that's when she had her military training.
By the late 60's she was already a strong personality within the party and was head of the Department for Social Affairs, having great impact in the communities affected by the colonial war, advocating for child protection and girl's education, as well as health care. She married Samora in 1969 and had a son, Samora Jr.
She was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1970, but she didn't stop her regular life, despite her visible fragile health. She passed away in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 1971 at the age of 25.
