The jury in Donald Trump's defamation trial against E Jean Carroll ordered the former president to pay $83.3 million for defaming her in 2019 after she accused him of sexually assaulting her in a department store in the 1990s. As per the verdict read on Friday, the 2024 Republican candidate must pay $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages.
Carroll had sought at least $12 million for reputation repair. She also demanded compensation for additional damages. A separate jury had last year found Trump liable for sexually assaulting then defaming Carroll. He was asked to pay $5 million then.
Here's a breakdown of the Friday verdict: - $7.3 million in compensatory damages outside of the reputation repair program, - $11 million in compensatory damages for a reputation repair program only and - $65 million in punitive damages.
Trump almost immediately reacted to the verdict, saying he will appeal it. "Absolutely ridiculous! I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party. Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!" he wrote on Truth Social.
After the verdict was read, E Jean Carroll and her lawyers hugged, shook hands and stood for the jury to exit. On the other hand, Donald Trump's defense team promptly exited the courtroom once they were dismissed.
"My advice to you is that you never disclose that you were on this jury, and I won't say anything more about it," Judge Kaplan told the jury.
