Prince David died on September 15, 2026, after a long battle with cancer and chemotherapy treatment at local health facilities.
His death comes less than three weeks after the passing of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died of cancer in the United States on August 27.
King Oyo was laid to rest around September 12, amid disagreements within the kingdom over the selection of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo as his successor.
Prince David had previously challenged King Oyo’s leadership. In 2015, he occupied Rwengoma Palace in a move that exposed longstanding divisions among members of the royal family and Tooro clans.
His death now adds another chapter to the kingdom’s turbulent succession history, with tributes highlighting his outspoken and confrontational spirit as well as his prolonged health struggles.
Tooro Kingdom is currently navigating heightened leadership tensions following King Oyo’s death and the designation of a new Omukama.
