Analog vs. Digital TV

With the big change to television signals coming up, it is important to understand the differences between some of the terms being thrown around. Most people do not know the differences between analog, digital and high-definition broadcasting. This will serve as a basic overview of those types of signals and how they relate to broadcast television.

Digital television, commonly referred to as DTV in today's age, allows broadcasters to send out multiple signals through a single cable. It allows for clearer, crisper picture quality along with the ability for homes to utilize high-definition televisions. As of June 12, 2009, it will be the standard television signal in the country and analog signals will no longer be used for broadcasting purposes. If you have a television purchased after March 2007 or utilize a cable box to get your television signal, you will not have to get a convertor box.

High-definition television, also known as HDTV, is a form of DTV. They use larger, generally widescreen pictures to produce the best possible picture quality and color available on televisions. In order to view high-def programming, you must have a HDTV and a cable or satellite subscription to get the broadcasts.

If you are looking for a new TV, it will be digitally ready. You do not need to worry about whether or not you need to purchase a convertor box. If you are not sure, check with your television's manufacturer or your cable provider. They can answer any questions you have about whether or not you are ready and what types of signals you can receive.
