Poverty is both absolute / relative terms even in developed countries still some people are facing it. In simple terms, poverty is not having enough money or access to resources to enjoy a decent standard of living; be that the lack of access to healthcare, education or water and sanitation facilities.
 
The earth is in a spherical shape, but when drawing the maps it will have to be put in a rectangular shape with the axis of margin being the equator.

So from the maps when it is near the equator it is more accurate to the dimensions than when it is far from the equator where the actual size will actually be smaller compared to the map.

So that is the best answer i can give you. There is no conspiracy on Africa when it comes to the map as you think. Maybe on other things but not this one.

While some of the claims in this message may be exaggerated, but overall message that Africa is a vast and resource-rich continent with enormous potential is undoubtedly true.

I saw these numbers in school. Any table that quotes the size of continents shows the size.
