South Africa and Zimbabwe are discussing a proposed US$500 million dam project aimed at supplying water to the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone in South Africa’s Limpopo province.
The proposed Thuli-Moswa Dam, which would be built in Zimbabwe’s Thuli area, is expected to have a storage capacity of about 430 million cubic metres and could supply up to 90 million cubic metres of water to the industrial zone.
South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation says the two countries are still discussing a joint feasibility study to assess the possibility of building dams in Zimbabwe and transferring water to Limpopo as a long-term solution.
The Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone is planned to host water-intensive and energy-intensive industries, including metals processing and manufacturing, increasing demand for reliable water supplies.
Zimbabwe’s Agriculture Ministry secretary Obert Jiri said there is currently no timeline for construction. If an agreement is reached, the project would reportedly undergo an 18-month preparation phase followed by about three years of construction.
Under the proposed arrangement, South Africa would pay for the water through an agreement lasting between five and 35 years.
The project remains at the discussion and feasibility stage, with financing, water pricing and cost-sharing arrangements yet to be finalised. (africa.businessinsider.com)
