there is NOTHING that is shrinking in Tanzania except the shrinking of CORRUPTION and the lords of the same are SCARED and are trying to divert our attention from CORRUPTION to Tundu Lissu.

When the report on MINE and MONEY MISAPPROPRIATION was being released to the public???????

DODOMA, Tanzania — Gunmen shot and badly wounded Tanzania’s most outspoken opposition figure Thursday near his home in the capital, the government said, in an attack that shocked the East African nation known for its relative peace and stability.

Lawmaker Tundu Lissu of the Chadema party, who recently faced criminal charges after he called President John Magufuli a dictator, was wounded by an unknown assailant in Dodoma, said Home Affairs Minister Mwigulu Nchemba.

Lissu was shot in the stomach, leg and arm, said Dr. Charles James, a regional medical officer. A statement from the opposition party said the lawmaker was “seriously wounded.”

Police have launched a manhunt for Lissu’s attackers, said Gilles Muroto, the Dodoma police commander. He said more than one gunman occupied the vehicle from which the shots were fired.

Lissu, who also leads Tanzania’s lawyers’ association, had appeared in the national assembly earlier Thursday and apparently was being driven home when the attack occurred.


On Twitter, Tanzania’s president said he was saddened by the shooting and said he was praying for Lissu’s rapid recovery. The ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, condemned the “brutal and unnecessary incident.”

In July, Lissu was criminally charged with using abusive language after he called Magufuli a dictator over alleged attacks on the opposition and the media.

Magufuli has faced growing accusations by rights groups and others of being intolerant of criticism since he was elected in 2015. Live transmission of parliamentary debates has stopped, and opposition rallies have been banned until the next election cycle in 2020.

In a statement, Amnesty International urged Tanzania’s government to investigate the attack and “reassure Tanzanians and the world that this shooting was not politically motivated.”

“This cowardly attack on one of Tanzania’s most fearless and prominent politicians raises concerns about the safety of all dissident voices in the country, at a time when space for dissent is quickly shrinking,” the group’s deputy regional director Sarah Jackson said.

shige2 could be one of the govt officers who tries to pretend not seeing what is happening on the grounds of this country used to be known as the heaven of peace. It is true, every Tanzanian is praying to his God for Lissu's fast recovery. We know that even a killer can attend a funeral for the man he killed if managed to escape unnoticed. So, praying for Lissu does not excuse those who are responsible to ensure peace to their subjects. Our national figure, the Late Mwalimu Nyerere once said "mfichaficha maradhi kifo kitamuumbua", literally meaning, if you hide your sickness death will put you to shame. While continuing with fight against CORRUPTION, the safety of all Tanzanians and our visitors should be of priority number 1. The happenings of incidents similar to that of Lissu have increased latterly and they don't deserve shinge2's "...there is NOTHING that is shrinking in Tanzania..." Hell NO!, piece is shrinking very drastically. What shinge2 is trying to hide, as taking from Mwalimu, will bring tragedy to our country.

The government should balance its effort in all social areas she tries to address, but safety of its people and everyone entering our country should not be underestimated for it has greater impact on economic and social aspects.

shinge2 should note that, here in JF you are addressing Tanzanians, East Africans, Diasporas, people who wish us well, AND NOT the Washington post.

My point here is CRYSTAL clear that NOTHING is shrinking. How and why did I arrive to that narrative? Here is the reason.

The issue of INSECURITY should not be blown out of proportion to the detrimental of our beloved country I'm not saying that there are none.

However those are ISOLATED incidences.
Should we COMPARE Tanzania and the USA in TERMS of INSECURITY, Tanzania is not near EVEN an inch.CRIME PRONE cities in the US are many. Like
LA,
CHICAGO
NEW YORK etc.
Your likelihood of being SHOT or MUGGED in those cities is 99.99%.
With those statistics you gotta agree with me that we are FAR FAR MUCH BETTER.
Even better than JOHANESBURG in SA.
