TANZANIA: Over 30,000 arrested for drug trafficking in two years
Friday, 13 February 2009
More than 35,000 people have been arrested for drug trafficking between 2006 and last year, the National Assembly heard yesterday.
The Minister in the Prime Minister`s Office (Policy and Parliamentary Affairs) Philip Marmo said greed for quick money was among the reasons why people involve in illicit drug trafficking.
He was responding to a question by Chadema MP, Lucy Owenya who had wanted to know why Tanzania was among the leading countries in the world for growing marijuana.
The minister however, said the government would not reveal the names of the suspects because some were still under investigation.
``Not all of these 35,000 people have been arraigned in court. Others are still under investigation, making impossible for the government to announce publicly their names,`` he said.
Marmo refuted claims by the legislator that Tanzania was among the leading countries for growing marijuana.
He however, said it had been difficult to control marijuana farming because it was normally grown in poorly located areas such as in heavy forests and mountainous areas, where state apparatus could not easily access.
