At least 115 soldiers from South Sudan's rival factions were killed in gunbattles in the capital Juba, a military spokesman for the opposition said on Saturday, amid fears for a fragile peace process in a country still reeling from a two-year war.

Gunfire erupted on Friday evening near the state house where President Salva Kiir and vice president Riek Machar, former rivals, were meeting for talks.

Both men said they did not know what had triggered the latest fighting between their factions and called for calm.

William Gatjiath Deng, spokesman for Machar's military faction, said the fighting had occurred near the state house and in army barracks.

"In the morning we collected and counted 35 (dead) from the SPLM-IO (Machar's faction) and 80 people from the government forces," he said.

Deng said the death toll could rise on Machar's side "because there are some soldiers seriously wounded".

The government side had no immediate comment on the situation in Juba.

At least five soldiers were killed on Thursday in similar clashes between the two sides.

Africa's newest nation is emerging from a two-year civil war which started in December 2013 after Kiir sacked Machar as vice president.

The conflict was largely fought along ethnic lines with Kiir mostly drawing support from his Dinka tribe while Machar was backed by his Nuer tribe.

A peace agreement last August ended the war but Kiir and Machar have yet to integrate their forces, a key part of the agreement.

Thursday and Friday's gunfights were the first major outbreak of violence in Juba since Machar returned to the capital in April after his re-appointment as vice president.

A Reuters witness said on Saturday Juba was calm but tense with road blocks mounted on some streets. Heavy military vehicles could be seen patrolling and most businesses were shuttered.

"It seems as though things have certainly calmed from what they were last night. However the situation is still very, very tense," said Jeremiah Young, an aid worker with World Vision.

Young said there was a chance the security situation could "deteriorate very quickly due to the tensions within Juba and the surrounding areas."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday the latest violence highlighted a lack of commitment to the peace process and urged the country's leaders to end the fighting, discipline military leaders and work together to implement the peace deal.

Where is M7 and Geza to solve this before they start streaming into our country again?

Sasa tatizo nini tena, hawa jamaa hawachoki, kila siku mtutu wa bunduki. Eti hata mahasidi wa zamani Kiir na Machar hawana habari kunani.

Depay n JuaKali1980 know very well Kikwete as a former Colonel n CIC is the only appropriate person to negotiate their two armies integration process!

Geza..I joined this forum just over a year ago and I have never come across a guy so bereft of reason and hostile to the facts as you.
No one in this region can talk about SSudan and DARE EXCLUDE Kenya from the facts...Now let me tincture you with the facts:

1-Its Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi(A KENYAN) not KIKWETE that saved the SSudanese from the jaws of those DANM ARABS FROM THE NORTH..

2-The comprehensive Peace Deal (THE PRECURSOR) to their independence was signed in 2005 in NANYUKI KENYA and ARUSHA..

3-Its our (KENYAN) largesse that provided the thousands of refugees who domiciled here a window of opportunity to either study locally or go abroad, not Tanzania.

I can go on and on about this, but I sadly must remind myself that am talking to a guy who hates EVERYTHING & ANYTHING KENYAN..
Here is the fact..Kenya is going NOWHERE....You can sit behind your laptop and inundate this forum with all sorts of drivel about KENYA or,SSudan and UG can circumvent Kenya with their oil pipelines all they want BUT
----We are thriving and we havent even sold a of drop oil yet...

Depay, Juakali1980 n still ignored? While Museveni has more clout on SS than Kenyatta! He knows Kenya can not achieve anything tangible men like Tanzania achieved in the whole of liberation mvts in Southern Africa. U made SS to become lawless Kenya while snatching Ilemi triangle for urself!

A reason i suspect Kenya has a hand on the ongoing conflict in the name of trying to sabotage the gains! Refer to Kamanda et al allegation towards SS n TZ. They were sent by Uhuru...since GOK did not refute the allegations!

Haikuwa sahihi kuwiangiza East Africa hawa jamaa wakati nchi yao haiko sawa, ilikuwa mapema sana kuwapa uanachama, sasa hapa hata haieleweki wanachopingana Kila siku

the whole reason why that conflict has not ended is because the wrong people were negotiating. kenya is the one that made south sudan posible (also the US was instrumental) but kenya did the ground work and thus its kenya which really undustands, even the south sudanies leaders know it

The demand that talks between Salva Kiir’s government and rebel leader Riek Machar should to be held on Kenyan soil is not new. But Juba now says that holding negotiations in Kenya will ensure talks occur under those it thinks understand South Sudan better.
“From the start, we have been saying these talks were not in the right place. It should have been in Kenya, where the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed [in 2005],” he argued.
“Lt-Gen Lazarus Sumbeiywo oversaw those negotiations that led to the CPA. He understands South Sudan better. In the current mediation process (sic), he has a boss and he is not free. He cannot make decisions that will help South Sudan.”
South Sudan, seceded from Sudan in 2011 following a referendum that had been agreed upon in the CPA. Negotiations that led to the CPA were mediated by Kenya’s retired Lt-Gen Lazarus Sumbeiywo.

Renewed fighting breaks out in South Sudan
JUBA | By Denis Dumo

JUBA Renewed fighting erupted in South Sudan's capital on Sunday and forces loyal to Vice President Riek Machar said his residence was attacked by the president's troops, raising fears of a slide back into full-blown conflict in the five-year-old nation.

There was no immediate response from the government of President Salva Kiir to the statement by Machar's spokesman. Earlier Kiir's information minister, Michael Makuei, said the situation was under control and urged people to stay at home.

The two leaders, who fought each other in a two-year civil war that started in late 2013, had made a joint call for calm after clashes between rival factions broke out late on Thursday. At least 272 people have been killed in the fighting, a Health Ministry source told Reuters early on Sunday.

Residents of Juba's Gudele and Jebel districts reported heavy gunfire near the barracks where Machar and his troops have their headquarters. A Reuters witness saw helicopters overhead but did not see them firing.

The Health Ministry source said 33 civilians were among those killed in the latest clashes, which have fuelled fears about renewed conflict and raised concerns about the extent the two men can control their troops in the world's newest nation.

The U.N. mission UNMISS said it was "outraged at the resumption of violence", which it said had led hundreds of people from Juba to seek shelter in its base. UNMISS compounds in Juba were hit by small arms and heavy weapons fire, it added.

The United Nations Security Council said it would meet later on Sunday to discuss the violence. The European Union, a major donor, and Kenya called for a swift return to order.

"Dr Machar's residence was attacked twice today including using tanks and helicopter gunships. Helicopters from Kiir's side attacked the residence twice," Machar's spokesman James Gatdet Dak told Reuters, speaking by phone from abroad.

He added that the situation in Juba had subsequently calmed, echoing comments from residents who said gunfire had eased later on Sunday after several hours of shooting.

Residents saw hundreds of people seeking shelter in a base of the U.N. mission UNMISS. "I saw dead bodies of civilians, and others ... moving with blood on their bodies," one man, who gave his name only as Steven, said by telephone.

Another reported seeing troops looting a shop in Juba, but it was not clear if they were loyal to Machar or Kiir.

STAND-OFF

The fighting first erupted on Thursday, when troops loyal to Kiir stopped and demanded they be allowed to search vehicles of Machar's loyalists. That stand-off led to clashes.

Gunfire broke out again on Friday between the vice president's bodyguards and the presidential guard, while the two men were holding talks at the presidential State House to defuse tensions. Both men said at the time they did not know what had prompted the exchange of fire.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday the violence highlighted a lack of commitment to the peace process and urged the country's leaders to discipline military leaders and implement the peace deal.

"The European Union will join the international community and South Sudan's neighbours to ensure that peace is restored rapidly," the EU Commission said in a statement on Sunday.

Meanwhile Kenya's presidency urged Kiir and Machar urgently to move heavy weaponry and contingents of soldiers out of civilian areas in Juba. It said Kenya was ready to support law enforcement.

Kenya Airways has suspended flights to Juba.

Machar and Kiir signed a peace deal in August 2015 but then spent months afterwards wrangling over details. Machar finally returned to Juba to resume his former position as vice president in April.

Analysts say the failure of the two sides to swiftly implement key elements of the deal, such as re-integrating or demobilising their troops, has cast a shadow over the peace process.

South Sudan's civil war was fought largely along ethnic lines with Kiir, a Dinka, and Machar, a Nuer, drawing support from their respective tribes.

Fighting since 2013 has left swathes of the country of 11 million people struggling to find enough food to eat. It has also disrupted oil production, by far the government's biggest source of revenues, leaving it mired in poverty.
